Hi, I used MacPorts to install kate. It looked good:
---> Attempting to fetch kate-4.12.2_0.darwin_12.x86_64.tbz2.rmd160 from http://packages.macports.org/kate
---> Installing kate @4.12.2_0
---> Activating kate @4.12.2_0

Don't forget that dbus needs to be started as the local user (not with sudo)
before any KDE programs will launch.
To start it run the following command:
launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchAgents/org.freedesktop.dbus-session.plist

---> Cleaning kate
---> Updating database of binaries: 100.0%
---> Scanning binaries for linking errors: 100.0%
---> No broken files found.

But there is no "kate" in /opt/local/bin/kate -- where is the editor? Anyone have a clue for me?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, MacPorts uses /opt/local as a sort of "/usr/local" working area.

So I can see that a Mac OS application is created. As a command-line kind of guy, I know that I can simply set my EDITOR to /Applications/MacPorts/KDE4/kate.app/Contents/MacOS/kate and things will work the way I want.

Yes, I was surprised to see "apps" showing up in MacPorts. Seems like the opposite of its intent, since the GUI does not use X11, but there is no doubt that this is a Mac port!
