I used this code to install java

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre

But then it showed this message
E: Package sun-java6-jdk has no installation candidate.

What can I do then?

Note: The instructions at java.com on installing java for linux are wrong. I have tried that option already.

This is likely due to the changed license conditions of Java now that it is owned by Oracle. I recommend you try installing Iced Tea Java instead.

I recommend you try installing Iced Tea Java instead.

I tried that option with:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install icedtea-plugin

But it tells me that it is already installed something like:
icedtea-6-jre-jamvm already installed in its latest version.

If I try to install sun-java6-jre it shows me also this message:
The package sun-java6-jre is not available, but some other package references
to it. This may mean that the package is missing, outdated or just
available from another source

What can I do? any ideas?

maybe icedtea is already installed

the command dpkg --list | grep icedtea will tell you which icedtea packages are installed

the command dpkg --list | grep java will tell you which, if any, java packages are installed

Please be aware that Iced Tea is a open source implementation equivalent of Oracle Java, and as such should be compatible with most Java applications.

You should only need to install Sun/Oracle Java if you are experiencing issues with Iced Tea.

Hello. For 99 pct. of Java needs, installing openjdk-6-jre will get you what you need. If you need the Proprietatry Oracle version, it's available via repositories if you look around.

I have tried that. But when I go to java.com to check if I have java installed I get this message error.
icedteanp plugin error: Failed to run /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java. For more detail rerun "firefox -g" in a terminal window.
So I don't know what else to do.

Have you tried launching Firefox as described (in a terminal) and posting the terminal output here?
Also, can you provide the output of this command from a terminal?
Code: Select all
ls -la /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java

You can use Konsole as a terminal app in this case.
