Sorry if someone has already posted something similar. I am having trouble being new to this and all. I have a blank hard disk that I would like to install kde 4.9. The problem is I thought I was getting somewhere on the getting stated pages and all the information I have been reading. Any help on point a newbie on how to get a new build on to a blank hard drive would be helpful.

could provide a little more info:
- what distribution are you trying to install ? this is really a distribution process as KDE is the desktop environment - how far have you gotten ? iirc when you boot from the cd/dvd during the install process you will be asked how you want your disk partition table set up, your partitions formated and how/where mounted ps - moved to the Linux forum |

To be perfectly honest I have downloaded all the source code then came to realize that I may have not needed to do that. The drive is formatted in NTFS, I was maybe thinking that maybe an issue? So as of right now all I have is the downloaded tarbell files all 155 of them from the source code page. Perhaps I need some simple instructions. I thought I could download the files and build the SW with (SLAX) Linux from bootable CD, after being unsuccessful with that, it prompted me to write this post. Again your feedback is appreciated.

did you read this http://www.slax.org/documentation_install_slax.php
it appears Slax is meant to be run from a usb device or from a cd/dvd iso but there is a thread on the Slax forum about installing it on a harddrive http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=vi ... ntID=35713 the "source code page" you mean the actual source code and not the compiled modules in tarballs? You should probably join and post on the Slax forum |

Yes, I downloaded the source code from this page:
http://www.kde.org/info/4.9.0.php I am assuming that I should have not done that from your previous post? If there is a page with the already compiled modules and some extra instructions about how to install that would be great. I really am looking to be come a just a user until I understand how everything works better. |

Slax 6.xx (last updated in 2009) runs KDE 3.5 and is 32bit only, for KDE 4.x and 64bit you'd need to run the preview version of 7.0 and if you're new to Linux you really don't want to run preview versions
Why did you select Slax and what exactly do want with Linux? Would suggest you pick a KDE based distribution and dl the LiveCD to test before doing an actual install. The distribution chosen's website will have instructions on running from the cd (or usb) and how to then install permanently on the internal hard drive - as each distro is different it is best to use their instructions for this The KDE source code you dl'ed is for the desktop environment only, not for the underlying Linux operating system. |
