Firstly...
With the terrible structure of the forum site... (especially the part of "automatically generated login usernames" you expect me to remember that name!?) i couldn't really tell where to post my help topic, but i tried my best to guess... so.. now that i'm done raging. heres my problem. When i try to log in to kde, i get a black screen with a ticking underscore, and then pretty much instantly get thrown back into the login screen, this is on a fresh install (distro is gentoo amd64) i'm running on a lenovo thinkpad t410 laptop with intel intergrated graphics, 4gb ram and an i5 Heres the output of my xorg.0.log (and i hope you have spoiler tags working here)
And heres my kdm.log
Dbus is confirmed installed, and set to start at boot. I did some googling and found this. i tested all the things suggested but they did not work, prior to installing kde all i can remember installing was x11 and chromium. This is a completely fresh install. the KDE version is i think... 4.9.3 xorg version is xorg-x11-7.4-r2 Edit: shocking realization, i got a Buffer I/O error on my root partition and it said that the ext4 fs detected aborted journal. i wonder if my partitions somehow got corrupt... that is pretty odd. i ran the livecd and ran fsck.ext4 -cDfty -C 0 /dev/sda6 which went through perfectly fine, this didn't help at all btw. I'm feeling a bit too lazy to reinstall my OS so if i wont find a solution to my problems within the next couple of days i am gonna try some other GUIs, i'm thinking xmonad, lxde and xfce on the top of the list, thats probably gonna be fun, but... i really hope we'll find out whats wrong ![]() Edit: i found out that i can log in to KDE, if i log in to my account through the console, then run startx, and from the x terminal run startkde, it runs just like i'd expect it to, but for some reason if i use the login GUI, or kdm i think its called? it just takes me back there again after i log in. |

It is quite unusual that KDE works fine if you login via a VT but does not work via KDM.
Are you able to start a "failsafe" or "X Terminal" session through KDM? Unfortunately the posted error logs don't give any indication as to why the startup is failing.
