I'm having a whole range of troubles after upgrading from Kubuntu 12.10 to 13.04.
To make a long story short, I'm having trouble with - The new display manager - KDE Daemon - Rebooting ...at least. Now one of the above, at least, generates a crash message at startup (KDE Daemon). I therefore wanted to post a bug, but that doesn't work either, as it says "Failed to communicate with kded. make sure it's running". I then tried to post a bug manually, but I am unsure as to which part of the system that's having a problem (linux kernel, ubuntu, KDE etc), so I'm kinda stumped. Didn't get much help by google (the problem is probably too new), found some more or less similar bugs but they were marked resolved. So I guess the question is: where to begin? Edit: Thanks for the reply google01103, part of my problem was figuring out which forum to post in I'll accept your answer and make a new post here with my specific troubles.

no ideas but:
1) create and login as a new user 2) describe your issues: - "the new display manager", what about it doesn't work? what is the "new display manager"? - "rebooting", again what about it 3) make sure all your packages got updated, both KDE and Kubuntu moved to Operating Systems -> Linux, not sure it's the best but definitely better then Development -> Helping Hands |

Can you try to generate a backtrace, using the "Developer Information" tab in the Crash Assistant?
We'll need this to investigate which KDE Daemon module is at fault here, so we can fix it or disable the faulty module.

Sure. I created one in case someone had use for it.

Please find and remove any "kscreenrc" file in ~/.kde4/share/config/ or ~/.kde/share/config.
Then logout and back in again. If removing this file does not solve the KDE Daemon crashes, then please open System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Service Manager. Under "Startup Services" locate "KScreen" or anything else with a name related to "Screen" or "Display" and disable it.

There was a kscreensaverrc file there, but removing that didn't help.
When I booted up w/o the docking station I was able to stop the kscreen 2 service (as kded then works). And indeed, that worked. I can now boot using the dock w/o kded crashing. If I try to start the service again, kded crashes immediately (when I use the docking). My desktop settings still aren't being remembered between boots though, but revert to defaults (I assume). Thanks for the help so far. |

The proper functioning of KScreen is necessary for your desktop settings (assuming you are referring to screen resolutions and positions, etc) to be retained across sessions.
I'm not sure why KScreen is crashing in this case, as it should not be happening. Can you please file a bug report at bugs.kde.org?
