displayport vga don't work together

Fri May 24, 2013 1:28 pm
hi,

i'm using kde 4.10 from ubuntu PPA repositories. On a DELL studio XPs1640 with ATI Radeon 3670HD graphic card.
I've installed the new kscreen/libkscreen for this issue, but also tested without.

Here is the problem, I've connected two monitors in addition of my laptop one. One monitor on the vga output port and the other on the displayport output (with a displayport to VGA adapter from KONIG)

1-At startup Displayport is working fine with KDM (but not the VGA).
2- When I log into my session, displayport stop working, but vga start working.

I've tried a couple of manipulations with system setting but nothing works.
So, i've two questions :
1- Does someone already encouter this problem ? Any workaround in the place ?
2- How can I investigate more on this (don't know the log files locations if there is some)? Some tests I could do ?

thanks for your reply!

Can you please provide a screenshot of your KScreen settings, as well as the output of "xrandr"?

It would appear that KScreen is not activating (or deliberately deactivating) your display port screen.
Try toggling the on/off switch for that output in KScreen to try to correct the issue.

Thanks for your help!

In fact, i've already tried this, but the strange thing is that toggling the displayport has no effect neither on the screen itself, nor on the old system-settings parameters. It's like there is no communication between kscreen and old system-settings interface, and no communication between kscreen and my displayport and system-settings and my displayport :-/

Which futher tests could I do to have a better debug log ?

So, i've also an HDMI output port, and have bought a HDMI/vga converter, so will try with this as soon as i receive the adapter.

Very odd. You may have run into a bug in KScreen.
You could try forcing the DisplayPort screen to be enabled directly through xrandr.
Code: Select all
xrandr --output DisplayPort-0 --auto

this the message you command send back :

Code: Select all
daeavelwyn@StudioXPS1640:~$ xrandr --output DisplayPort-0 --auto
xrandr: cannot find crtc for output DisplayPort-0
daeavelwyn@StudioXPS1640:~$ sudo xrandr --output DisplayPort-0 --auto
[sudo] password for daeavelwyn:
xrandr: cannot find crtc for output DisplayPort-0

But the screen is recognize on the vga port (HP LE1901w).... I've also bought a HDMI to VGA converter, but kscreen and old system settings don't regocnize the adapter....

Ah - if I recall, Intel graphics cards only have two CRTC units. Certain outputs are only connected to certain CRTC units, and in order to output different resolutions, different CRTC units must be used.

In this case, KScreen has picked the highest supported resolutions for each display, and as the Display Port connector is at the end, it misses out. This may also explain why the HDMI adapter is not working either.

You can test this by disabling the VGA output, which should cause the Display Port output to come to life.

hmmm, ok, i will test as soon as possible (i'm travelling for now), the problem is I'd like to have vga AND displayport at the same time. But perhaps this is a limitation of my graphic card.
Really thanks for your help bcooksley :-)

Not a problem. Whether you can use VGA and Displayport at the same time will depend on the capabilities of your graphics card - it may be possible with the right CRTC layout/configuration. If I recall correctly you can usually drive multiple outputs from the same CRTC as long as the resolution is the same across those outputs.
