My specs: Thinkpad T61
Kubuntu 12.10 64-bit KDE 4.10.4 Kernels tested: 3.5.0-34-generic, 3.5.0-34-lowlatency, 3.9-6.dmz.2-liquorix-amd64 groups: *USER* adm disk dialout cdrom audio www-data plugdev fuse lpadmin netdev admin sambashare pulse vboxusers jupiter realtime Cannot get parts of my sound system to work. Ever since pulseaudio started being included in kde (I have had same system since before kde4), my single soundcard has multiplexed into many confusing variants in my sound device list. Before, I managed to move around these device to the right position by using the test button. After I upgraded to 12.10(foolishly, but I wanted a working nepomuk) ALL of my sound stopped working. After hours of purging/reinstalling pulseaudio, editing .asoundrc/alsa.conf/pulseaudio.conf I managed to get phonon to recognize my Intel soundcard again(the extra cards came back as well). I managed to get Amarok/VLC and the phonon tester to work, but not sound from Firefox(Iron sound works fine) and MOST importantly: I could not get jack to work for my music creation stuff. I get an error:
Here is the output of alsa-info.sh:
My .asoundrc:
My /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.d/50-pulseaudio.conf:
Pulseaudio makes KDE require users to have well-rounded linux expertise to troubleshoot. This has struck beyond my expertise. It would be nice to Reset the sound system configurations. But purging/reinstalling pulseaudio did nothing. I wanted to just upgrade again to the next dist-release, but I only have 1.59GB left on root(to upgrade requires more than 2GB), and I can't resize root. I am however, considering moving /var to the same partition as /home which would give me enough space. My belief is that the problem is with the card order. Here is my /proc/asound/cards:
Sometimes sound in Firefox works but stops working randomly. I haven't been able to get Jack to work, can someone please help me? |

It seems that Jack cannot open the audio device. This could either be because Pulseaudio is locking it, or because crucial parts of Jack are missing.
Because your user configuration has experienced many changes, could you try testing out the sound under a new user please?

Sorry for taking so long for a reply.
Upon start with a new user, KDE tells me that pulseserver crashed. JACK gives me these errors:
And thank you for the reply, my posts on Ubuntu and Kubuntu forums haven't received a reply yet. |

Hm, that is a very unusual crash by Pulseaudio. Only references to it I could find were a security vulnerability though - http://www.akitasecurity.nl/advisory/AK ... ility.html
You may want to see if you are fully upgraded...

I have no updates from Kubuntu 12.10 Universe. But something weird happened after I created a new user and went back to my default user. The usual "Your audio device has been removed" popped up and has been happening for YEARS, but usually doesn't affect my sound. However, this time, the devices now on the list are:
Where did the plethora of names for my soundcard go? VLC works the same but Amarok only plays with hw:1,0 enabled. Did some more digging now that I had a clue:
Apparently this card called VirMIDI is now HW:0 and my soundcard is HW:1. Sure enough, if I set jackd to
Which brings me to the next question: Why is VirMIDI set to card 0 and why did an dist-upgrade change that? Also, what is HW:1,1 and card 29(ThinkPad Console Audio Control)? |

With regards to the virtual MIDI interface - check to see if a kernel module called "snd_virmidi" has been loaded. Unloading this should fix that part of the issue. I'm not sure why an update would cause it to suddenly start being loaded however.
As for the ThinkPadEC device - I'm not sure what this is unfortunately. Chances are it may be associated with a modem of some description however.
