I'm trying to install kubuntu 14.04 on a Lenovo G 500 with hybrid intel/ ati graphics. I wanted to check everything out in live session, but when I hit the try kubuntu button, a list with notifications appears and then nothing happens. On the same laptop, the Xubuntu 14.04 live session starts ok. I also tried the Kubuntu dvd on an older computer and it works fine. (Sorry if I don't use the proper terms. I'm not a native english speaker).

Have you tried the live CD/DVD on another machine to exclude the possibility of a dodgy download?

Yes I have and it works. I don't understand...Xubuntu 14.04 and my Lenovo get along wonderfully, but I want Kubuntu...

Are you able to observe a moving mouse cursor?
Also, does pressing Alt + F2 have any effect?

Why don't you try a
sudo apt-get install kde-full Or does that get rid of xfce?

No, I can't see the mouse cursor and Alt+F2 does nothing. Since the live session doesn't work, I've installed Kubuntu in Virtual Box to test it and everything is fine. Does this mean that Kubuntu will run the same way on the real system? |

Thank you for the reply. I actually would prefer a pure installation of Kubuntu since I don't want both Xubuntu and Kubuntu apps. |

Just to ensure that it isn't a problem with the Kubuntu 14.04 live media, could you try installing KDE within your existing Xubuntu system? If that doesn't work, then we can dig further into why KDE is unable to handle your particular system. If it works fine, then we need to investigate what makes the Kubuntu and Xubuntu 14.04 Live systems different, so we can determine why Kubuntu fails while Xubuntu is able to succeed.

The iso image is fine; I've installed it on the Lenovo in a Virtual Box and I ran it in live session on an older computer. That is the strange part: the dvd does produce a live session, only not on Lenovo but the live session for Xubuntu 14.04 works well. I don't know if it has something to do with efi booting being enabled or with the hybrid graphics...But how come Xubuntu isn't affected by the same problem? The Lenovo laptop is currently running Ubuntu 13.04 because I couldn't get Ubuntu 13.10 to work; it booted in low graphics mode. It seems that the new kernel solved the problem with graphics, but then the other problem occurred... So I seem to have 2 options: 1. I risk and try to install Kubuntu or I install Xubuntu and add KDE desktop. Anyway, I won't go back to Windows (even though here, in Romania, almost everyone has "free Windows" . Linux is great! |

The lack of mouse cursor makes me think the system is having problems with the Hybrid Graphics - does the Kubuntu live disc display anything (startup splash) during the boot process?

Hi, I just had the same problem with Kubuntu and Ubuntu Gnome 14.04, and indeed it is a Hybrid Graphics problem. If you go into the Bios / Configuration and change Graphic Device to UMA Graphics it should boot up. It worked for me, hope it works for others

Interesting. If the original poster can verify that this is indeed the case a bug should be reported against Ubuntu - as the Hybrid Graphics integration shouldn't cause breakage such as this.

Ok it's definitely a hybrid graphic bug. I just tried Ubuntu 14.04 and it booted in low graphics mode. It seems that I'm stuck with Xubuntu. I don't know why it woks but it does so I' ll install it for the time being. There is probably some workaround by changing some settings in bios, but I don't have enough experience to try it; I don't want to "break" anything.

You could also try another distribution - which may not experience this issue. Otherwise, you can always install the kubuntu-desktop package once Xubuntu is installed to get a KDE desktop session.

I was thinking about manjaro linux; I don't know if it works or not. I don't really want to leave ubuntu as I learned a lot about this distribution and it is hard to start again. |
