You could also try the KDE version of Mint as another alternative. I'd also advise reaching out to the Kubuntu folks - they may be able to assist you with deactivating the Hybrid graphics integration to allow you to install it easily.

I have read every post I found on this subject... Because Xubuntu 14.04 32 bit' s live session went well, I had the brilliant idea to install it. The installation went well, but after rebooting xubuntu joined the rest of the family and went blank . I also tried manjaro (64 bit), but it didn't booted (some kind of efi error). So I installed ubuntu 13.04 again because it is the only one that works . |

Rather unfortunate you haven't been able to upgrade. Please file a bug with Ubuntu about that - I suspect there will be configuration options within it's X stack allowing you to disable the broken hybrid graphics integration.

Ok, I gave Xubuntu 14.04 another try and this time it worked The command lspci | grep VGA shows:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09), so no discreet card. Do you know what is different in Xubuntu because nothing else worked (Ubuntu, Manjaro, Mageia) ? |

I'm afraid i've no idea - for those that failed to work, did they at least show their boot splashes, or did they fail to do this as well?

Yes, they did and then they froze. I think they are trying to boot using the amd graphic card, and the driver isn't the right one. Xubuntu is clearly only using my intel card. But that is very strange... aren't Ubuntu and Kubuntu using the same kernel as Xubuntu?!? I'm happy with Xubuntu for now, but I just want to understand why this phenomenon appears. |

If you press Esc when the splash freezes, does it show a text console?
Also, do Caps Lock, Num Lock, etc respond to being pressed?

Sorry for the resurretion, but I had the same problem OP had.
And I found 2 solutions: Solution 1 - Use the 64 bits version Solution 2 - Change boot options in 32 bits version For change boot options you need press Ctrl before kubuntu logo appears. Next you need to press F6 and select the option with SPACE or ENTER. acpi=off : Works noapic : Does NOT work nolapic : Does NOT work edd=on : Does NOT work nodmraid : Does NOT work nomodeset : Works, but is ugly free software only : Works at first, but freezes when mouse cursor appears I tested others distros too: Arch 32 bits: Has 10% chance to boot At 90% of the time has some random errors like
And I fall back to some kind of emergency mode prompt. Arch 64 bits: Works Lubuntu 32 bits: Works (It is 32 but works) My notebook is a LG A530 with Intel/NVIDIA GT555M hybrid graphic. lspci:
Sorry for my bad english. |

Thank you for your input. For me, nothing worked. Pressing any key had no effect, kubuntu and other buntu and non buntu distros just froze. But I had a copy of Xubuntu 14.04 (32 bit) made immediately after it's release which installed ok and only froze after updates. So, I installed the the Xubuntu without checking the install updates box and I uninstalled the xserver-xorg-video-ati (the amd driver). Since then, my Xubuntu is working great because it is only using the intel video card. Maybe the problem will be fixed in future releases...

Based on the error message you provided it looks like the system has some memory management issues as well, so a newer kernel may help here.
This probably doesn't apply as such for the Lenovo G500 though - although newer graphics drivers may help there (sounds like a patch release to one of those breaks things at some point though - but hopefully that regression is fixed in a later minor release).

So the new Kubuntu 14.10 works like a charm! Problem solved!
