load dell 1710n laser printer drivers to 14.04OS; this remains unsolved for days. Via google, I found redtop linux drivers work. But to get there it's via terminal. //forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=18426191/. I found this posted in a March 2014 French Tutorial, which I translated.

Am posting this as a KDE brainstrom as I expect to overlook the changes one must make. First let me add, the Service Tag on my dell 1710n laser printer is: HZF2N71 and the Express Service Code is: 39146933485.

the French Tutorial says -- the old method explained here:
https://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/tutoriel/inst ne_methode ...
it is to recover your written drivers for redhat printer here:
ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/printer/print-dri ... c2-x86.rpm
to save to your hard drive
then move it to the terminal in your Downloads folder
cd Téléchargements
then you need to download alien if you did not
sudo apt-get install alien
Then he will turn your downloaded package fake red hat and to make it compatible with ubuntu this command
sudo alien -c print-drivers-linux-glibc2-x86.rpm
it is a 32 bit package but since Ubuntu is multiarch now, even if you have a 64 bit version, I think it will still work
once done you must install the newly created package
s should call print-drivers-linux-glibc 2-x86.deb
sudo dpkg -i print-drivers-linux-glibc2-x86.deb
then you'll have to fit this command:
sudo dpkg -l | grep dell
and that you give us the result
to read if you do not follow the tutorial we will notify
if it hangs when using alien gives us back full control of the blocking

I just try and block it going !!!
you'll have a problem with the alien control
you must use a pirouette
you must first change the rpm package tgz:
sudo alien --to-tgz -c print-drivers-linux-glibc2-x86.rpm
you get this line
drivers-DELLPrtDrv-5.3.1.tgz generated
then go to the tgz in deb
sudo alien -c drivers-DELLPrtDrv-5.3.1.tgz
and you get
drivers-dellprtdrv_5.3.1-2_all.deb generated
then it will install it with
sudo dpkg -i drivers-dellprtdrv_5.3.1-2_all.deb

Hi
I tried to follow all instructions; I am sending you a copy of the terminal with the manipulations that I've done.
After he asked me the IP address of the printer, but I do not know where to find it.

you should be able to find your printer from directemet
you do not have a way to print directly from the printer a test page or configuration page?
as if the driver seems to have installed, you can try for cups by going here:
localhost: 631 / printers
if your printer is visible click on it, you should get a page with the IP address

OK!
I think I missed a step at the start: Currently my printer is not connected to my Freebox. should be that I can connect; or I think it is impossible, because my printer does not have ethernet port. (It is currently connected to the PC via a USB port).
I did not risk under these conditions to find its IP address.
Would there be a final solution?
Is it possible to connect to the router with usb cable? (I doubt)

Is it not possible to run alternately on windows and ubuntu, just local?

if it is connected with a USB cable so it does not need ip address
the installer from should not ask you to ip address .... it is strange to say the least
if it is plugged into USB
instalation manual driver may be enough
meets the following four questions:
1) hen you use your printer driver
System-config-printer
the printer is visible?
2) the printer is it visible from cups by clicking this link
localhost: 631 / printers
3) gives the command
lsusb
4) your printer first it is plugged into a usb3 Port (blue)?

No, my printer is not visible on the link you gave me.
My printer is connected to a (not blue) Classic USB port
For the rest, here is a copy of the terminal.

I managed to run the printer generic laser printer.
The quality is very bad, and impressions of random documents.
The printer is now visible with the localhost command.
Progress is ...!

oh I made a mistake
I put a capital inadvertently !! I did not check sorry
you can return again this command
system-config-printer
(The same command without the capital !!)
and tell me if the printer appears with a green arrow in the window that opens
whether used in this window using the top right and throws an error search
let yourself guide
if he proposes to install a driver M5200
then installs the

This is a KDE forum, not an Ubuntu one. The matter you discuss is relative to the OS (I suppose an Ubuntu derivative in your case), not to the DE (KDE). You can file a big report for Ubuntu if you please.

Google'ing brought up these, also there were suggestions to select different HP laser drivers

none-the-less as mentioned earlier this is a distro/Linux issue not a KDE one, you might even try the Dell forums
