Hey, thanks for reading this. Anyway, I'm a bit of a KDE/Kubuntu newb and I can't write to /usr/lib as I do not have the permissions of an owner.

Note: I'm running KDE on HP Chromebook 14

I'm trying to install JRE 8 and I need to write to /usr/lib in order to install it.

Thanks!

fyi /usr/lib is owned by root, normal users only have read and execute access to system folders/files

see http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/201 ... 12-04-lts/ if you need the official Oracle package do a Google search or search the Ubuntu/Kubuntu forums there should be instructions

moved to Operating Specific -> Linux

ps: to do things as root when required there are three commands (simplistic explaination):
- su, become root in a terminal until you run "exit"
- sudo, run a single command as root
- kdesu, run a gui app as root
note: running as root can be dangerous/distructive so be wary

Thanks and sorry for posting in the wrong subject, I'm new. Anyway, how would you go about moving a file/folder to a folder only acessable by root?

Code: Select all
 sudo mv file-or-folder_to_be_moved folder_to_be_placed_into

you will be asked a password, give it your's

ps - you really should just use the openjdk-8-jre package which is probably already in your ppa's
