Pinguy Builder

Tue Oct 13, 2020 8:35 pm
I am sorry for having to ask this question here, but I can't seem to find another place to ask. I'm hoping someone here can help. I am trying to use Pinguy Builder to build an installable iso from my current system. I have been successful in that I can get an iso that installs and has all the additional software I installed. But, what I can't get it to do is use my current Plasma setting and Plasmoids. None of these are found on the new iso and the default KDE theme is being uses. This is the very fist time I have ever used Pinguy Builder. Indeed the first time I have ever tried anything like this. Also a newbie to KDE. Loving it. :) Anyway I am so close on this and I don't want to give up. As an FYI, Pinguy Builder is supposed to have a GUI, but I can't get that to work so I'm using the command line and the config file. Anyone who has ever used this that can help. I would be greatful.

Thanks

I am a bit puzzled why you want to make an ISO from your installed system, wouldn't it be much easier to actually download the ISO from your distribution?

FWIW: a bit more information about your system might be helpful...

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

I would like to make an ISO because now I am needing to install this configuration across aprox 5 computers for my family. It took a lonngggg time to get everything setup just this way and I am not sure I can recreate it accurately. PinguyBuilder by all that I have been able to find out, and that isn't too much. Should be able to create an installable iso based on my current configuration. By creating my own installable iso I can install to the other computers and have the same base config that I currently have. That and I just want to try to do it. Too see if I can. Do I really have to have justify my reasons? All I want to know is if anyone here as used it and can help me with this last part. I can get it to create a installable iso with all the downloaded software. Which itself is a good start. But my Plasma setting, plasmoids are not being used. It is using the default settings. While it isn't critical. I just want to lean how to do use this tool. What I have learned about this tool is that there should be a way.

Thanks

The exact same configuration on all computers would only make sense if those computers are all identical (specifically regarding CPU, GPU and display, RAM, etc), else you would run into problems very fast. At least the distribution provided ISO has enough flexibility to be able to adapt those.

You still didn't tell us which distribution and which exact Plasma version this is about... especially since it only runs on an Ubuntu based distribution and needs at least 15 GB free space. AFAICS it hasn't seen any updates in 5 years, I wouldn't use that tool now in 2020

I am on KDE Neon 5.20

I need to be able to move my Plasma configuration including plasmoids, kvantum settings and themes, Kwin scripts and settings, and Aurorae configuration/Theme, Icons to different computers to apply to different user logins. I have not found anything that even comes close to this so far. Please, dear lord, do not tell me that I have to manually do this for every pc I am about to install. If that is the case then no matter how much I like KDE I will have to go back to ElementaryOS. I am not about do this manually for the next 5 to 10 computers. I need to be able to duplicate my current KDE to different computes with different users, easily.

I found a plasmoid that seems to be doing what I need. I can't remember the name of it now. but, it will backup, restore and export plasma settings. It doesn't seem to handle Kvantume, Aurorae, or things like KWin scripts but it's close enough.

You could try copying your personal stuff (~/.*) - actually
Code: Select all
cp -rf ./.[^.]* /media/USBstick/
and from there to the new system's /etc/skel , then make a new user and see if it copies them in its ~/. It should...
