My regular updates to 20.04, about 6-jan-21, caused my computer to crash on closedown, preventing a direct closedown. Eventually I found out how to close down from the Terminal, but restarting also crashed the system. Reinstalling 20-04 from a DVD copy was OK, until I tried to install the Updates due, when the same crash happened.
My system is quite old, about 10 yrs, and I have moved from 18-04-05 a short while ago (the same problem does not arise with 18-04 Updates (yet)). Details - Info. From Kinfocentre + System Settings =

Operating System: Kubuntu 20.04
KDE Plasma Version: 5.18.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.68.0
Qt Version: 5.12.8
Kernel Version: 5.4.0-62-generic
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 2 × AMD Athlon(tm) Dual Core Processor 5000B
Memory: 3.6 GiB of RAM
Video card – Radeon 2100 (RS740)
Video Driver – radeon module X.org R300 project, 2.1 mesa 20.0.8
Monitor – HF237 (VGA-0) (1920x1080)

Problem -
On Closedown-Log-out get Kubuntu Greeter “ksmserver-logout-greeter” Error + segmentation fault
COULD carry on working - Copied Crash reports to USB-250
Could not Shut Down computer from menu, or ‘Ctrl-Alt-Del’
Discovered terminal command to shutdown. Worked, but Start Up = Fail - locked-up

Software updates, one by one, failed when I'd done the following Update (from Spreadsheet + Notes) =
6 “mesa” updates + (needed) “libllrm11” (v_1:11.0.0-2~ubuntu20.04.01_NOT on Spreadsheet – added) =
libegl-mesa0 20.0.8-0ubuntu1~20.04.1 Update = 20.2.6-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
libgbm1 20.0.8-0ubuntu1~20.04.1 Update = 20.2.6-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
libgl1-mesa-dri 20.0.8-0ubuntu1~20.04.1 Update = 20.2.6-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
libglapi-mesa 20.0.8-0ubuntu1~20.04.1 Update = 20.2.6-0ubuntu0.20.04.1
libglx-mesa0 20.0.8-0ubuntu1~20.04.1 Update = 20.2.6-0ubuntu0.20.04.1

This was repeatable. I can continue to use the DVD copy, but would like to get all the updates, some of the radio software I use might need them (One needed the 18-04 to 20-04 change).
I have not discovered the problem on here, but I am probably not using a useful search criteria.
Possibly no-one else has encountered this as my computer is quite old, and most here have modern systems I guess :-)

Is it a known problem, when is it likely to be fixed, or not ?
If not, I will have to consider finding another OS version which works (if possible) - Ubuntu is good for radio programmes available natively - my previous Linux only had very old, or no, copies, and I had to keep updating by hand.

So, I wonder if anyone here can advise me, many thanks, Regards, Ed G8BQR

OS
Please run the following commands in a konsole:
Code: Select all
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo dpkg --configure -a

Does this solve the issue?

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Many thanks for your response Mamarok.

I tried the commands but the error still occurred.
I have a text file from the Terminal, and a copy of the system log, but have not found a way to attach the files here (yet).
There were a lot of things which looked wrong, but I do not know what items are important :-/

The error occurs when the screen locks as well as when the computer is stopped. I am not able to access System Settings to prevent the screen locking either - the error is determined to get me whatever I try to do !
I have put my working system on a spare hard drive, and am keeping it free of updates for the moment. I can see the test hard drive from this one if I connect them both to the computer at the same time, and get the F12 boot choice correct :-)
I can only progress my own fault finding by reinstalling the OS from DVD each time - very frustrating, so I came here :-)

I tried the radeon update before the mesa collection of 6 updates, and that was OK.
I can try each of the 6 mesa updates one by one (unless they are interdependent) and eventually, slowly, determine a possible source.
My preferred solution is to download an updated DVD copy of the OS which has proceeded past this update point and works for me, hence the query about when :-)

Many thanks, Regards, Ed G8BQR

Do you really need to stick to 20.04 LTS or could you upgrade to 20.10? LTS is meant for businesses that deploy a system on many PCs, but upgrading on a single PC is quite fast and easy.
Of course it only comes with 64bit, but then 20.04 does as well, so if you need 32 bit software I suggest you look at Ubuntu MATE, where you can always install Plasma on top.

Doh, why didn't I think of that Mamarok :-))

I normally stay with the LTS version because I hope to avoid any problems from the computer OS being not quite stable, when I'm playing with radio stuff.
And sometimes the radio software is not caught up to the latest OS.
I'll try 20.10 and see how it goes.

Update - The 20-10 DVD is OK (dated 22-Oct-20), but when I apply the current updates the same problem occurs.
Nice to see the 20-10 DVD has a at least one radio prog. updated though :-)

Hi, I have just tried Installing all Updates to the 20-10 DVD - EXCEPT for those 5 above which are not already on the DVD -
That is to say the following Updates were not installed -
libegl-mesa0
libglapi-mesa
libgbm1
libgl1-mesa-dri
libglx-mesa0

(Note - libllvm11 is already in the 20-10-DVD)
The errors I was experiencing have not appeared (in a minimal install, with little use, except reporting here)
I am guessing that mesa is the problem, but with your experience, is it sensible to go to whatever forum exists, especially since I am a beginner ?
I get the impression they might ask all sorts of technical questions that I would not understand :-(

Advice would be appreciated :-) Regards, Ed G8BQR

I am a bit puzzled at why you need anything else than the standard software that comes with 20.10, are specific mesa driver versions needed for some third-party software you need to use? I quite doubt that a Radio application (which per se has no use for 3D drivers AFAIK) would need anything special.

My computer is a recent AMD Ryzen system and everything works quite fine out of the box with a standard 2.10 installation of Kubuntu, and backwards compatibility to older AMD systems shouldn't be a problem.

Hi Mamarok,
The problem I have is that I am unable to add all the Updates presented by Discover (or Muon) without the computer being unable to Shut Down, etc.
I create a new install from the DVD (20-04 or 20-10) taking up the whole of the hard drive, which is fine.
Discover creates a list of Updates when I start up, which I normally just download the lot, as I don't have any special requirement. Then the problem occurs.

I have done partial Updates, onto a new DVD install each time, in order to determine the Update component(s) which are affecting me.
Those affecting me seem to be the ones I have listed above - I think. If I omit them the computer seems to behave normally, as far as I have tried it out.
The components seem to be mesa related, which seems to be related to screen rendering, etc.
I admit I am prodding around a bit, but it is similar to fault finding radio stuff :-)

Hope this clarifies the issue, Regards, Ed G8BQR

Could it be you are running out of space on your disk? You should always keep some free space in the / and /home partitions because on shutdown the computer needs temporary space to store shutdown information

Hi Mamarok,
I don't think that disc space is a problem. I had a 40Gb partition originally, but moved to a whole 170 Gb install, then a 500 Gb disc, just because I had those spare.
My gut is saying support for my processor / graphics card (both 2009 if I remember rightly) has been removed, but Linux is usually good at old hardware - so I am reluctant to jump to any conclusion on the basis of nothing :-) without confirmation.

Hi all,
I have the same problem as described. Only I found out the following
When I run the following updates, I get the same problem as kde-ed.
it's about:
- libgegl-mesa0 20.04.1 to 20.2.6
- libgbm1 20.04.1 to 20.2.6
- libgl1-mesa-dri 20.04.1 to 20.2.6
- libglapi-mesa 20.04.1 to 20.2.6
- libglx-mesa0 20.04.1 to 20.2.6
Also starting a new installation with a new version already gives problems at startup and it is not possible to install KDE. An update to an even newer version has the same effect. I also tried Kubuntu but it also crashes after updating.
I also had Ubuntu on my system and then installed KDE plasma later, but after updating the same problem.
Are there any options or is the system just too old?

My system is:
AMD Athlon 64 Dual core
ATI RS690 (X1250) graphics card
6 MB Internal memory
hdd 1 sata 500 gb
hdd 2 sata 250 gb
hdd 3 sata 180 gb

Hi Martijn, and any others interested,

A bit of an update.
I was running the DVD version of Kubuntu-20-10 with no updates, and then installed "wine" - this promptly initiated another crash - it seems that "wine", and I guess, other programmes, may need the problematic Mesa Update, and I did not look through the packages that were to be changed :-(

However, I have found a fix.
In Muon package manager there is the option of right clicking on the offending 5 Mesa packages, and in the Options it is possible to "lock" the Mesa package version. This is proof against the Full Update of the DVD packages as I have now installed them all, with the 5 Mesa packages locked.
And I am still working :-)

I do not expect this to be a solution which lasts for long as there will eventually be packages which need the Mesa updates in order to work correctly.
So I am hoping for a Mesa repair - no response as yet :-/

Regards, Ed G8BQR (yes, I forgot my original log-in info. ! )

Dear All, Update
The latest 21-04 works fine :-)
But had to learn to install from USB as the DVD image would not work for me, killed 2 USB sticks :-(

However, I am now much happier, Regards, Ed
