Hi,
I recently upgraded from OpenSuse 10.3 to 11.1 Unfortuantely after installing the nvidia binary driver the system doesn't boot into kdm anymore. I found folowing errors in /var/log: Dec 23 17:03:15 yoda kdm_config[27301]: Multiple occurrences of key 'UseTheme' in section [X-*-Greeter] of /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc Dec 23 17:03:15 yoda kdm[27319]: X server "-accel" cannot be executed Dec 23 17:03:15 yoda kdm[27299]: X server for display :0 cannot be started, session disabled Dec 23 17:03:17 yoda kernel: NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 177.82 Tue Nov 4 16:50:05 PST 2008 Xorg.0.log (or any other) doesn't report any error(s). I also removed the "-accel" options from DISPLAYMANAGER_XGL_OPTS in /etc/sysconfig and did an init again. The difference is that then kdm complains about the '-br' option that cannot be executed. Strangely enough, when I do a startx from the CLI x starts fine and launches kde3 (instead of kde4, last known default I guess...) Does anybody have an idea on how to fix kdm (kde4) on OpenSuse 11.1 ? |

You may wish to read this blog post about a person with a similar problem
Apparently KDM times out waiting for the NVidia driver to initialize. Apparently by editing the /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc file you can fix the problem. Instructions are available at the blog.

These lines make me suspicous:
Why would the NVIDIA kernel module be loaded *after* X fails to startup? Also could you try looking in Xorg.99.log?

Xorg.99.log doesn't give any error.
Indeed it 'seems' that nvidia driver is gettig loaded quite late... I'm trying to find out why and how to tweak it. Stay tuned. |

Hi,
I had the same problem with my newly installed openSUSE 11.1: after installing the proprietary ATI driver, KDM didn't come up any more, but startx worked fine. After a few hours of searching for the error, today I looked at the /var/log directory and found a huge kdm.log of about 2GB! What on earth lets the kdm.log grow to that big size?! I deleted the file and reinstalled the ATI driver (fglrx). Now everything works fine. OpenGL-3D-Rendering is fast (tested with etracer), KDM comes up at boot, and kdm.log grows only about 1.7KB per start (no courious lines found in the file after deletion). Hope this helps. Now I will take a look at the Sound problems (error window on startup, but sound works). bye Marcus |

Hi,
I managed to 'fix' it by re-installing OpenSuse 11.1. The difference is that I chose install/Reinstall instead of upgrade. I guess there's something wrong with OpenSuse's upgrade procedure. Thanks for all the replies ! |

If the problem you were having has been resolved, could you please add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the thread subject? Thanks in advance.

I had some similar issues around the nvidia drivers on Fedora. What I discovered in the end was that the actual X server had gone missing. I reinstalled X and some of the open drivers followed by the nvidia ones (all steps where needed) and that fixed it.

The solution is to modify the file /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager.
I had the same problem i.e. no GUI following update from openSuse11.0 to openSuse11.1 - update completed and rebooted into console only. Change the line in file /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager: DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER="xgl" to DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER="Xorg" Save the file - and reboot. You should now have a KDM or XDM login dialog. Hope this helps Cheers Paul |

I had the same problem, I quickly resolved it though. The problem I was having was right off the bat using the live cd. The kdm would time out while waiting so I switched my video driver before initial boot to vesa and then installed suse (after two kernel panics so i re-downloaded 11.1 three times). I had to eventually download the non-oss cd from the site and then check repos on the site to find the drivers after which I updated like bytesemantics did and switched from vesa to my current drivers.
