openSUSE KDE Themes

Sat Jan 17, 2009 11:46 pm
Alright so i just got the latest openSUSE (KDE version), and my first question is which KDE version am i running? Control Center says 3.5.10, but i thought openSUSE 11.1 comes with 4.1? Furthurmore the default openSUSE theme resides in subfolders open kde4 (w..t..f.)
This brings me to my second problem. I have downloaded a theme from kde-look and am having a pain in the butt time trying to figure out how to use it. I've installed kbfx, but simply hitting install on the theme was not enough.
I had to uncompress the file to /opt/kde3/share/apps/kbfx/skins and THEN run the configappmanager as root, then it would let me install it, and it shows up BUT it wont let me use the darn thing. I can select the theme and press apply all the times i want but it's no use. Emerald wont even see the file :/ Please help!

To check KDE version, open dolphin and see Help -> About KDE.

You can install new theme from Right click on desktop -> Appearance Settings -> New Theme (for desktop theme) and it should show kde-look.org sources (maybe needs configuration, I'm not too sure about openSuse)

If you selected the KDE option when you installed openSUSE, then you have KDE4.1. The KDE3.510 was under Other option (maybe).
Kbfx - You installed it as root - and If I'm right the permissions in /opt/kde3/... are alse set for root. Maybe this causes the problem. Why don't you try to unpack it within your users directory and then install it?

oi, such a hassle haha. The theme is 3.2+ so it should work correct?
And yeah i can add some themes using the desktop theme manager, but not all, such as ones that need to use kbfx. Ill try reinstalling it in a moment and see what i get.

Edit: Yeah, it didnt work the same stupid **** happens, it WONT apply the themes. Man i dont understand this **** application at all :/, would ya mind explaining how to use kbfx? i mean i understand it runs off some applet that you add to your bar, not sure if widgets in suse are the same as applets, but anyways, that kbfx spoix or whatever applet isnt in there like all the stupid help files say. Been trying to get this working literally -all- day -_-.

@FLCL: Since you are used to a KDE 3 environment, I would recommend if possible reinstalling openSUSE 11.1, making sure to select the KDE 3.5 option when you get to select your Desktop Environment ( it is under the "Other Options" item )
