Hallo there,
I would like to install KDE 4.2 (final) on my Ubuntu 8.10 system, which so far uses only Gnome. It would be nice if I could see an "KDE 4.2" option in the sessions menu before logging in. It would be great, too, if this installation does not require setting up 50 packages by hand! Help appreciated. Greetings Ralf |

I think you will need to use a 3rd part repository for this, or the backports repository. Once located, simply installing the "kubuntu-desktop" package will probably pull in all needed packages. ( Don't do this until you have found a KDE 4.2 repository however )

Yes you have to use a launchpad ppa repository to install it. Follow the instructions here (especially step 2) and then install the kubuntu-desktop package. You then should be able to choose a KDE session from GDM. |

Thanks for your help.
However, I get this error message: root@ralf-desktop:~# gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 493B3065 && gpg --export -a 493B3065 | sudo apt-key add - gpg: WARNUNG: Unsicheres Besitzverhältnis der Konfigurationsdatei `/home/ralf/.gnupg/gpg.conf' gpg: Ausführen von externen Programmen ist ausgeschaltet, da die Dateirechte nicht sicher sind gpg: Kommunikation mit Schlüsselserver fehlgeschlagen: Allgemeiner Fehler gpg: Empfangen vom Schlüsselserver fehlgeschlagen: Allgemeiner Fehler (In English: something is wrong with the ownership/file permissions of `/home/ralf/.gnupg/gpg.conf') Any suggestions? |

Yes: try to run the command as a normal user and not as root. |

Also you'll need a GPG key that is somewhere on Launchpad.
I get similar problem (but that didn't prevent me to upgrading from RC1 to 4.2)
But I have no idea which repo is giving my problem nor where to get the GPG key. Hope you'll have more luck with yours.

@wittmarf: When changing to root, ensure you do it like so:
Or since Ubuntu forces use of "sudo" by default:
Which will change to the root user fully. You will then be able to import the GPG key.
