Please read subject.

1. My desktop is crashing, unknown whether it is the fault of the OS (Kubuntu 8.10) or the KDE version 4.2, which was recently upgraded. When it crashes, I get a flashing orange and bluish-gray screen of symbols arranged in rows and columns. The symbols are of circles topped and bottomed with horizontal bars.

2. Since the upgrade on my desktop (#1 is on my laptop), I cannot input any characters in the Adept Software Update Password dialog field.

3. Dialogs and windows that are opened and positioned by default in the upper left corner of the screen are not completely showing on the screen--the left edge and the title bar are outside the screen edge.

4. If I want to resize any windows or dialogs that are usually resizable, I cannot do that with my mouse. I am not sure that I can even do it at all.

Will somebody please help?

Thanks,

Desktop Crashes -> If you are using KWin Desktop Effects, disable them. If you use NVidia, or Ati, upgrade to the latest available driver.

Cannot Input characters -> Try manually focusing the line edit.

Resizing windows -> I have never heard this issue before with KWin. If using KWin, then outside a KDE session erase the file ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc. I have no experience with other Window Managers.

In general, this sounds like a broken installation. Try to see if the issues are reproducible on new users. If they are, please ensure all packages are up to date. If they are not, try removing the Qt configuration files outside a KDE session ( ~/.config/Trolltech.conf )

I cannot get to the System Settings to disable KWin Desktop Effects (if getting there makes it possible to disable them).

For the password input field, I tried to manually focus the cursor--no go.

To fix the Desktop Effects issue, exit your KDE session, then login at a terminal ( Ctrl + Alt + F2, then login )
Then try using these commands to ensure your system is fully updated and to remove the KWin config:
Code: Select all
rm ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Make sure any other repositories you may use such as Backports, etc. excluding the Standard repos are disabled, apart from the KDE 4.2 repo.

I did this but no change.

I cannot get into Adept, remember? I there another way to do this?

Mmm, most likely you ran in to some file conflicts with the packages. Some fixes were uploaded last night, so I'd recommend logging in to the console and doing a sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade from there.

If it still doesn't work it would be great if you could paste the failure log.

I am a n00b. It didn't work. So, how do I paste the failure log?

This is usually contained in ~/.xsession-errors if logging through KDM / GDM ( Graphical Logon prompt )

Place it in a code bracket.

[ + code + ] to open
[ + / + code + ] to close. Make sure to take out the spaces and "+" signs.

I have the same problem I think.
After logging in through kdm I get the splash screen, first icon appears and as next 2 are starting to appear the system totally hangs, keyboard and mouse, not possible to shut down with quick press on power button. Only option is power reset.

If I (re)move .kde folder or create a new user it takes longer to happen, sometimes long enough to actually get to the desktop and interact with it for a short while.

I managed to get use of the system one time, by setting [Compositing]Enabled=true in kwinrc, for about half an hour, everything seemed ok but after reboot it was back to the same situation and it does not help setting compositing to true.

My OS is Kubuntu 8.10 fully upgraded with all Ubuntu repositories enabled and no 3rd party, AMD sempron 3000+ 1Gb, nVidia GeForce FX5600 256Mb, proprietary drivers version 173.14.12 (apparently the most recent supporting my old video card, but I'm not sure about that)

X server is running without problems, I can login to Gnome fine, no visual effects though because I've removed compiz since that supposedly conflicts with kde 4.2 (at least in Kubuntu)

.xsession-errors is as follows
Code: Select all
Xsession: X session started for tilraun at lau feb 28 10:38:49 GMT 2009

I am sorry Eggert. I do not have any suggestions. However, I can tell you of my experience with this particular matter. I tend to not have too much patience with weaknesses such as this. So, I downloaded Fedora 10 KDE and installed it on both my laptop and my desktop. It has performed flawlessly on my laptop, and on my desktop, I had to reinstall it because of a program that I got carried away with called Autoten. Stay away from that. Besides that, I have full confidence that Fedora 10 KDE will fulfill the needs that I have in an operating system for the months ahead. By the way, if you go with it, first thing you should do is install

yumex

(Yum extender)

It is the graphical frontend for yum package manager. Essentially an Adept or a Synaptic for Fedora.

Command line is:

su
password:
# yum install yumex
Follow on.

I hope you can benefit from this.

Best regards,
theAdmiral

Thanks for the suggestion Admiral. I started my linux experience with Fedora and never really liked it 100% but kubuntu I'm totally settled into. A extra reason for wanting to stick with kubuntu is that here in Iceland we have to pay for all international downloads by the Mb (about $20 per Gb) and ubuntu is the only distro afaik that has a well working domestic mirror. With 4 machines the updates quikly start to collect a bill to big for my taste.

I have continued my trials. After installing Gnome I can log in to failsafe session and from that terminal I can run kwin and plasma and also all scripts from /usr/share/autostart without problems.

So now I've got kwin and plasma running, with desktop effects on. Everything seems stable enough, although two copies of the panel are fighting for my attentions. Sadly I seem to have accidentally deleted my old .kde directory in this process and with it my local inbox for KMail, :Sigh: oh well, life goes on.

Still not satisfied with the status of this, I would like to try and figure this out.

Anybody out there who has suggestions to what I can do more to test this?

Kv. Eggert

If you are using anything related to NVidia or ATI for graphics, ensure you are using the latest drivers ( use the second to latest version for NVidia, the latest ones have issues apparently )
