Before anyone start a GUI or no GUI on server comment - I have heard it before, no need to get it started
![]() So far, I have installed X and kde-core. But I need some more, and especially I would like a package handler. Can I just pick anyone? Maybe I should have installed the full KDE instead. How do I upgrade? Or can I just do a apt-get install kde? Will packages that are already there be skipped? But it is at least a start. I typed startx and KDE started. Great ![]() How do I get KDE to start automatically when I reboot? The point of this thread will be to find out how to get the most efficient, but also userfriendly KDE running on a server. The reason why I did not install a complete Kubuntu desktop is that it comes with a lot of extra stuff that I do not need with a server. I wish there was a Kubuntu-core that did not have all the extra applications. Or even better - a KDE-server package that had all the dependencies built in so you did not have to worry about anything...

sure you can just apt-get install kde, which will install a debian version of kde desktop (note this is not kubuntu-desktop!)
kde is a desktop environment which will start only when you log in. so you may need the auto-login feature. install kdm and enable auto-login in kcontrol , that's all. |

Got KDE installed (on Ubuntu Server 8.10) and it worked. Did an upgrade to 9.04 last night, and things are still working ok ![]() So if anyone has any tips how to optimize things, I am all ears ![]() One BIG positive surprise was the Samba module in the settings. EXACTLY what I have been looking for. Just wish there was one for bind9, CUPS and a few other things... ![]()
