How to downgrade to 4.1

Sat May 09, 2009 8:16 pm
Is it possible to safely downgrade KDE from 4.2.3 to 4.1.3?

Many thanks.

You must change your package repositories in Yast using next link as reference:

http://en.opensuse.org/KDE/Repositories ... 8STABLE.29

and next reinstall all kde & qt packages.

If you do change do not forget to add a comment. At least I'm thinking of doing the same.

why would you want do such a thing ?! ;)

on SuSE you may have some issues attempting to do it, just because of all the scripts and configuration files left.
assuming that you are using openSuSE 11.1, then you should be able to `zypper` to modify the repo that was added to upgrade KDE4 from 4.1 to 4.2
list repos with something like
Code: Select all
zypper lr

find the one for kde4 and
Code: Select all
zypper mr -d

refresh current repos
Code: Select all
zypper ref

search for kde packages, choose something like kdebase
Code: Select all
zypper se kdebase

and then you should be able to explicitly specify the kde package with version that you want to install. you may have to do this for all the kdepackage and dependencies (including phonon, qt, etc)

Code: Select all
rpm -qa | grep -i -e '^kde'

hope this helps you for what ever reason you need to downgrade. unfortunately, i don't think everything is going to go as smoothly as you would hope, there may be other things in your user's home folder $HOME/.kde/

take care,

vb

The reason I want to downgrade is, that I have more problems with 4.2.3 than with 4.1.3. But maybe that's to do with kded not starting (and I don't know how else to fix it) and therefore things are not running as they should, ie. each time I add/delete an icon from the desktop I have to click refresh desktop to see changes, also when new programs have been installed, I have to logout and back in in order to see or even run them, global shortcuts aren't working at all (I can't even perfom CTRL+ESC), network status not showing and so on.
Bottom line, 4.2.3 is starting to annoy me.

Probably because KDE 4.2 is the most unstable KDE ever ;).

this must be an opensuse packaging of it then. on the slackware-current branch, kde 4.2.2 is worlds more stable than the 4.1 branch was.
i'm sure that when openSuSE comes with 11.2 they will have a release surrounding the kde 4.2 latest or maybe even 4.3, and it should be better if for no other reason than being an official GM release with those versions of kde, and not a patch repository update.

An older user configuration could also be the cause of your problems, so try with a new user.

Thanks for all the answers, but I had a hard disk failure last nigh, so I ended up having to re-install onto a different drive.
For now I'm sticking with KDE 4.1.3, which seems to be running fine. It has the same little niggles, that I tried to fix by uprading to 4.2.3 (which subsequently made things worse). But for now, I think I will leave it at that.
