[SOLVED] Can root log into Kde 4.2

Fri Jun 05, 2009 10:34 am
Without starting a big debate on whether it's safe or not I'd like to ask a question.

Is it possible to log into the Kde destop in KDE 4.2 as root?

I''ve been trying for 5 days to get it to work in sabayon 4.1 and have had absolutely no luck.

And after reading various threads on this topic.....

Yes I know it's unsafe
Yes I know it's unwise
Yes I know it's a very very bad idea.

What am I trying to do that I can't do using su or sudo?
Log into the kde desktop using my root account.

Why do I need to log into the desktop using my root account?
My computer, I'll log in as root if I want to. If I want to be told what to do with my pc or how to run it I'll go back to Windows.
I've been trying to do it for 5 days I'd a matter of principle now.

I'm very sorry if I offended anyone or came off like I have an attitude. I've spent the last five days looking for a solution and every time someone asks this question there are always the same three responses to the question. Just use su or sudo....What are you trying to do?......Logging in as root is a bad idea.

Again sorry if I'm copping an attitude but at this point su and sudo are not good enough period. It's either root access to the desktop or Sabayon or KDE 4.2 is off my pc.

[SOLVED] Can root log into Kde 4.2

Some distributions deliberately prevent any form of Root login. I can confirm it is quite insecure and unrecommended, however upstream KDE does not have any limitations built in to prevent root login.

Last time I checked SUSE does not do anything to prevent root login ( although you do have to enter the username manually )

Thank you for the reply. I had read a post that stated kde 4.2 was actually built in a way that prevented the root user from logging in to the desktop. He sited the error "$Display not set or can not connect to the server" as proof.

I'm glad you cleared that up. I'll have to see if I can find the site I read that on and post a link to this thread.

Again, thanks for responding.
