KDE is not working on Fedora 11. The login sesssion goes ok. Then after that anything I open in KDE is shown in a very large window with giant fonts. Impossible to navigate or do anything. After some minutes the PC hangs and I either have to logout or reboot depending on what I opened. I really liked KDE 3.5 under CentOS5 but could not use the WIFI in that distro.
bummed! Any advice?

It's easy to get caught up in the complexity of technology while searching for a solution. But the solution is most likely to be a simple thing.

Try editing $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/config/kwinrc and find the entry "Enabled" under "Compositing" and set it to "false".

I did what you said, this is all that is in that file.
Also I looked at many of the other files and so many reference KDE 3, may mean nothing. I just found out the hard way that removing something in yum removes the dependencies and had to fix some gnome stuff. That said how can I remove and reinstall KDE 4.2 without huritng other needed files and programs? Or do you have another way to go about this? Thanks!

I reopened this in VIM and the Composting enabled is set to false.

i can use some of the widgets however the title is unreadable with giant fonts most applications are so big i can not navigate in any meaningful manner i would like kde 4.2 if it were not for this bug. what about dpi settings?

DPI settings could be one thing you could try to change. No idea how to change it however.

Did I ask my question wrong, cause I am getting very little help.
This AM I played with several settings. One was the applet that lets you choose kwin or gnome-compiz. This was cool, I could use all kinds of kde stuff within gnome. For example the zoom utility under kde was working in gnome. Maybe once my original issue is solved I can have a functional hybrid desktop. The 2, gnome and kde seem to play well together. Still no solution to the large fonts in many applications while in a KDE session. any further guidance would be appreciated!

I believe there is a setting in System Settings under either Appearence or Desktop which allows you to specify the DPI setting.
The freezing problem was likely related to KWin automatically enabling effects, which your system cannot appear to handle unfortunately. Please report that to bugs.kde.org with driver versions and graphics card in use.

DPI settings can be accessed in Appearance -> Fonts.

Ok guys I'll post the bug and check the settings, Thanks.
I did try to save some screenshots but it did not work out well in the KDE session. I used prntscrn button and ctrl-v to the desktop which made a file each time that had my zipcode on them. weird? What features could I try and disable in KDE that might make it work with my system. I have the Intel 945GM vid chip. I know there have been some issues around those chips in linux and I do not get the choice for resolution change in display applet or dual head choice. I did search quite a bit on the web for all this including here and fedora. It is only apps that open up so large, the widgets and menu system are fine. It is like it half works, wow that was a very technical (not) explanation. Thanks |

To be clear, compositing/Desktop-effects is disabled by default in Fedora, so that's most likely not it (unless reporter enabled this manually).

Hi everyone,
I think I got the same problem as the parent poster. I've seen this problem before in Fedora, and it seems somehow related to the video card drivers rather than kde itself. As such I created a bug report: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=508807 If anyone else has this problem please vote on this bug. |

I had same problem.
You need to set Force Font DPI to 96. Usual way using "System Settings"->"Appearance"->"Fonts" will help, but you can not reach it. Huge font makes it impossible. But you can fix it in xterm or in text console (Ctrl-Alt-F2). cd ~/.kde/share/config And create file kcmfonts that contains
Then restart KDE |
