Hello all,
I am a Ubuntu Hardy8.04 LTS user and installed in Hardy the KDE (version 3) to try. It is said that the newer version of KDE is a lot better. Now KDE Hardy gives mee the possibility to upgrade from Hardy to Jaunty in just one step (Very good!). In Ubuntu you have to do this via version 8.10 and then to 9.04. Does this mean that after the KDE upgrade my Ubuntu version is also upgraded from Hardy to Jaunty? This does not give any problems? Best regards, Frits |

Anyone?
I am wondering why my topic is moved to Linx without a message from the moderator. It took me some time to find it again. For me it is related to Users: Installation and Configuration. |

Well, the Kubuntu family do not have a KDE 4 LTS version as of yet, as the previous versions were a tad too unstable to be sure. I'm not entirely sure what your computer is doing, but it dosent seem as though you were intended to upgrade, as Jaunty is not LTS standerd (beleive me, your better off with Kubuntu 8.04, 9.04 is, frankly, terrible!)
As for the mods? Well...it could have something to with [REMOVED BY MODERATOR FOR NOT BEING AT ALL MOD FRIENDLY] :P

WEll, no response from a moderator, so far......
I am used to have good and active moderators on the forums I have bin untill now. No big + for this forum. Maybe it is better also to find a better KDE forum? Tips? On topic: It is said by KDE users that the newer version of KDE is a lot better. I would like to use the possibility to upgrade within KDE 3 Hardy to the 4 version in Jaunty. But.....is after the KDE upgrade my Ubuntu version also upgraded from Hardy to Jaunty? That's what I would like to know. Regard, Frits |

Usually topics are moved by the Global Moderators and a link is usually left behind. Unfortunately in this case it appears that the link has been removed or wasn't created because the box was accidentally unticked.
This is in the Linux forum because it is Ubuntu specific. If you wish to use a PPA or 3rd party repository then only KDE will be upgraded, however if you use the official repositories then you will have your entire system upgraded.

Thanks for the explanation about the topic place.
You second explanation about repository is to difficult for me. I want to use the upgrade possibility within KDE 3 (Desktop Kubuntu installed via Synaptic in Ubuntu Hardy LTS) to Jaunty 9.04 KDE 4.xx?. Is after the KDE upgrade my Ubuntu version also upgraded from Hardy to Jaunty? And are there common difficulties to be expected? That's what I would like to know. |

Through that method, yes you will be updated to a completely Jaunty system.
The usual problems such as Multimedia, etc will have to be fixed, and if you use NVidia with the NVidia driver then you will need to reinstall that also..

Tried the Live CD. Started up, after choosing language install started and after some time just a DOS like screen turned up with some information about root en administrator rights. Only way to stop was to push the on-of button.
Edit: Checked it on my old laptop, Live CD works fine. |

Unfortunately, I do not know why Kubuntu would even prompt for the root password, since it isn't even set by default.

Lovely! Remember though, Jaunty is not LTS.
