[SOLVED] KDE4 Beta Repository?

Mon Oct 13, 2008 4:09 pm
I'm running KDE 3 Hardy Heron on the default repository but I was wondering if I can add in the beta4 repository for KDE4 so that I can test the new updates but still use the proper repository for my KDE3 stuff?

What are the KDE4 Beta repository details to add to the source.list ?

Well, it's not really a beta repository at the moment. For Hardy it has the latest stable version of KDE. (4.1.2)
But when all things are said and done you will be able to install KDE4 alongside KDE3 for testing with this repo. ;-)
Install instructions can be found here

In a condensed form, the instructions basically say to add this:
Code: Select all
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu hardy main

to your sources.list and install kubuntu-kde4-desktop.

Alternatively, you could use KDE Nightly, which is a nightly build of the development trunk.

Simply add

Code: Select all
# Neon Nightly Builds
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/project-neon/ubuntu hardy main

to your sources.list and install the following packages:

Code: Select all
kde-nightly-kdepim - runtime components from the official KDE release
kde-nightly-kdeutils - runtime components from the official KDE release
kde-nightly-kdenetwork - KDE network applications (nightly build)
kde-nightly-kdegraphics - KDE graphic applications (nightly build)
kde-nightly-kdeplasma-addons - runtime components from the official KDE release
kde-nightly-kdebase - runtime components from the official KDE release
kde-nightly-kdepimlibs - core libraries for KDE PIM 4 applications
kde-nightly-kdelibs - core libraries for all KDE 4 applications
kde-nightly-kdesupport - KDESupport stuff
kde-nightly-kdemultimedia - KDE multimedia applications (nightly build)
kde-nightly - Project Neon (KDE Nightly)
kde-nightly-strigi - fast indexing and searching tool for your personal data (daemon)
kde-nightly-taglib - TagLib Audio Meta-Data Library

And simply choose KDE-Nightly in KDM

BUT this might be very unstable ! For instance, I cannot unlock my computer after the screensaver gets activated ! So use with caution ! You you do not know what you are doing, do not use this version !

Will the nightly version also change to intrepid if it goes live?

btw this forum isn't showing correct in my version of konqueror kde 4.1.2. It gives a very small reply box.

Currently packages aren't offered for Intrepid since supporting one Ubuntu series is difficult enough. ;-)
Technically the packages are installable in Intrepid, but last time I attempted that it broke launching Qt apps until I removed kde-nightly.

I suffer from the forum typing area disfiguration as well. Sometimes it works properly other time is doesn't. :sigh:
