I just tried out the OpenSUSE unstable version (which contains 4.3) and, somewhat troubling is that I could NOT access the internet. The damn program would not even TRY to connect.
God almighty... Help!

Could you try a different front end for networkmanager? From what I hear, KNetworkManager is not yet intended for general consumption...

Alternately you could try manually configuring the interface with YaST, then installing Wicd ( you will need to add a 3rd party repository ) which is a very good no-frills network manager I find.

Are you using the plasmoid or the monolithic client? If the latter, you have an icon in your system tray.
Notice that the monolithic client at the moment is much more stable than the plasmoid, which is in a real state of flux right now.

I'm using the Gnome Applet. It's a pity, but its the only applet were vpnc works.

It doesn't help the OP now, but I seem to recall someone's working on a Wicd solid-backend. Anyone knows the status of that, assuming it is under development and my memory is not playing tricks on me.

I've got a similar issue. After logging in try to execute
You'll have to wait a bit. But the tray icon should have changed from a blue symbol to a plug. |

The Wicd Solid backend is part of KDE 4.3, however it requires Wicd 1.6+, and there are few systems which expose Wicd data currently.

Wait, b, run that past me one more time; did you say WICD is now built into KDE?
Hmmm...where can I get my claws...I mean, hands...on WICD 1.6? Preferablly in 64 deb file format?

Wicd simply has integration with KDE, and is still an external project. Its integration with the Network Management plasmoid is still very weak.
It will however make KDE applications aware of the connection status when using Wicd. You can probably find it in a PPA, although you will need to use its Gtk interface.

Hey, as long as it can work in KDE properly and use the notification scheme, I'm happy.

Just out of curiousity... where abouts is this KNetworkManager for KDE4? I'm only aware of the KDE 3 variant.
My background: I'm a developer for Gentoo, working on their MIPS port. In particular, I've been working on getting KDE 4.3 going on MIPS, mainly for an upcoming port to the Lemote Yeeloong and similar systems. So far KDE 4.3 works reasonably well (a few bumps... e.g. libkjs causing Konqueror to crash... etc) but I find it quite usable for the time being. I would like to have a KDE4 interface to NetworkManager if possible however (I don't fancy installing Gnome). I'd like to also help KNetworkManager improve, which is difficult without at least knowing where the latest variant of it lives. I should point out that solid appears to know that NetworkManager exists... so at least some of the KDE 4.3 framework is aware of it. Regards, Stuart Longland |

Hi Stuart,
Network Management ( KNetworkManager ) is being developed by wstephenson ( main framework parts ) and sebas ( Plasma applet ) in /trunk/playground/base/plasma/applets/networkmanager in KDE SVN. The actual system that makes KDE "NetworkManager" aware is Solid however, and that is part of kdelibs ( Base library ) and kdebase ( Individual NetworkManager and Wicd 1.6 backends ).

Ahh right... I'll have a look and see how I go. Solid appears to detect NetworkManager, I'm just missing the GUI widget that configures it.
