I recall being able to start X with either the Gnome or KDE desktop, but have forgotten the simple step. Debian Stable. Someone please refresh my sieve-like memory. TIA!

Are there any button in the login screen? See if any of them let you change.

Now that's what I call genuine help!

Yes, there's a rather ambiguous "Session" button, and it works beautifully. I don't recall things being quite like that the last time I had this kind of a setup, but then I don't recall much from those days at all. "I don't know, it must have been the roses...."
