I installed KDE4.X (Kubuntu) in VirtualBox today and I am quite impressed! I would like to get more familiar with the KDE desktop before going to a full install on my work laptop.

I am only having 1 problem. I can not get the screen to go over a 800x600 resolution.

Is the video controlled by X in Kubuntu? Can I edit a config file like in Ubuntu?

Yes, Kubuntu also uses X like Ubuntu does, and you should be able to edit it in the exact same manner.
