Problem using KDE on mini-ITX board

Mon Oct 05, 2009 1:53 pm
Hi,

I have successfully installed Fedora 11 on my mini-ITX board (EPIA SP8000EG) which was previously a blank system and can boot the system up.

I can log in with a Gnome desktop, but if I chose KDE, after entering my username and password, the screen shows a wiggling line shape which slowly grows over about 10 seconds. It then changes to a black screen for a couple of seconds before dropping me back to the log-in screen.

Under Gnome, the system works as expected; applications (office, Firefox, etc.) are ok.

I seem to remember having similar troubles before on my desktop machine (some while back, so I am a bit hazy on the details), but I think these were cleared by updating the video driver - that machine has an nVidia graphics board.

This time I am not sure, as I am unfamiliar with the built-in video chip.

Can anyone give me a clue what to look for/where to look to see why KDE fails? I find it a bit odd, since Gnome works well.

Thanks

Mick

Try editing ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc.
Find the section "[Compositing]" and changed the line "Enabled" to "False".

Thanks for that info. I have been away for a couple of weeks so I never got chance to read this until today. I will try that.

Thanks

Mick
