I have an ASUS X20S laptop with a dual boot Kubuntu 9.04 (KDE 4.3.2) and Vista. When using Vista, I am able to plug the laptop to one of the projectors at the university and use my slide shows to teach my classes. However, when I am using Linux/KDE I cannot make it work. In Windows, I have to press Fn+F8 to toggle between different modes: only my screen working, only the projector working, or both (which is exactly what I want, to be able to see my presentation both in the laptop screen and through the projector). In fact, when I press Fn+F8 in Linux absolutely nothing happens. The other Fn+function keys (for volume and brightness, for instance) work flawlessly. I tried 'xev' in the terminal, and whereas I get an output for the other Fn+function keys, I do not get anything when pressing Fn+F8.
I have been looking around in the forums and I have not been able to find anything about this so far. I actually have no idea if this is a KDE issue, a Kubuntu issue, something specific to my laptop... Any ideas? Thanks! |

Can you check to see if the "xrandr" utility lists the video outputs?

I imagine that you mean while I am connected to the projector, right? If so, I will have to wait until I get to school on Monday, as I do not have one at home. I will post the results then, but just in case this is what I get now:

sometimes the command `krandrtray` can be of assistance to readjust the display or utilitize the additional display.
also, is your video card an ATI or nvidia? |

It appears that your Laptop's other outputs are not being detected.
Can you please post the output of "lspci" and "cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep Driver"?

Here are the outputs:
I still have not gone to school to be able to try 'xrandr' when I am connected to the projector. I will send that info later. Thanks for your help! |

I tried to connect the laptop to the projector and run all the commands again, and they all come up exactly the same. Bottom line: nothing happens.

You need to install the NVidia driver for your system to function fully. It can be retrieved from NVidia's website. Your graphics card number if required is 8400M G.
If you have already installed it, then you should be able to use the NVidia utilities installed to configure your outputs.
