Hi,

For the last week or so when I boot and get to the login panel the system hangs for a long time. The mouse cursor will not move and keyboard input of my password does not work for a couple of minutes or so.

Kernel details and extract of syslog below.
From the syslog the following seem to be the likely problems:-

kdm_greet[3168]: Cannot open default user face

console-kit-daemon[2693]: WARNING: Couldn't read /proc/2692/environ: Failed to open file '/proc/2692/environ': No such file or directory.

Any help will be gratefully appreciated. I'll put this on the KDE forum also.

Look for output that occurs immediately after the system starts responding again. The MOTD update is a likely to be involved in this since it would involve a connection to a remote system.

The ConsoleKit configuration message is also abnormal and could be involved.

There is nothing more in the syslog immediately after the system starts than I gave in my first post.

At other times in the syslog where there are cron\motd activities there do not seem to be problems or delays

I did kdm -debug 0x80 which gave:-

/var/run/kdm.pid just contains 2862 I assume it should have 3635.

Would changing permissions and/or owner do anything for me?

Further to my last post.

I booted again. Still got "Cannot open log file /var/log/kdm.log" but, when I looked in file /var/log/kdm.log I found an entry "Time: Wed Oct 14 14:31:01 2009" which was the time of the boot!

/var/run/kdm.pid still contains only 2862 so I assume syslog is correct and it is not being written to.

Which user is KDM running as? Have you recently enabled something such as SELinux or Apparmor?

This sounds like part of your installation is damaged. Try reinstalling the KDM package.
