Automounting USB drives

Sat Dec 19, 2009 9:35 pm
Hi there,

well, I know that similar questions have been posted like a million times before, but I just couldn't find any useful answers...

The question is: How to tell KDE to automount external USB drives (flash or hard disk) and which mount options to use? This could be done very conveniently in KDE 3.5, but so far I haven't found anything similar in the 4.x series.

The funny thing is that some old drives which I had already in use back in the good, old KDE 3.x days still automount with all the settings I defined back then. I just can't figure out where these settings have been stored and why they are still active. At least I didn't find anything that looked like my preferences in the udev and hal configuration files.

So if anyone could either tell me how to make KDE 4.3 automount my new USB drives (preferrably with custom mount options) or give me a hint where to look for those KDE 3.5 settings so that I could adapt them for new drives I'd be really grateful...

KDE 4.4 includes an auto mounter, which may satisfy some of these requirements. The reason why automounting still works for those devices you had already configured is because components of KDE 3 are likely still running on your system.

ah, great news -- looking forward to the new release!

Seems you're right -- after removing every package which had "kde" in its name and "3.5" in its version string, automounting of the old drives apparently has ceased to work. Still it would be interesting to know which KDE 3 components were responsible for observed "legacy" automounting and how they got activated during boot-up or log-in.

Anyway, thanks for your reply --

The likely way of it working was through a KDE Daemon module. I have no idea why kded from KDE 3 would be started though.
