I noticed i was running out of memory -shocking since i had 30 GB assigned to the Kubuntu-and deleted the most of the files responsible for it. Now i can hardly login at all. Only console login is possible, despite having MORE than 10GB of free disk space. Help appreciated with this one.

Clean (with X down) these directories
/tmp and /var/tmp Most distros do nothing about those directories and the fact they could be filled with tons of "rubbish". Note that the cleaning of those directories is best done during boot so if the problem is there you should think about a cron job...

Are you running out of memory, or are you running out of disk space?

You can verify the amount of space used/left on your root, /home, and other mounted partitions by typing at the command line:
You want to see the space stats for your / partition. If Use% is showing 100%, you need to make space available. If like me, you don't need to keep downloaded packages after they have been installed, you can clean the package cache. I run:
Then run df -h again and see how much disk space on / you have gained. Assuming no other issue than a space problem, this should allow you to login to your desktop normally.
