Please can someone help
Am relatively new to Linux and KDE. I have been using Kubuntu Karmic with KDE 4.3.5 for some time now. It's great. Today there was a pile of upgrades (I like to stay up to date). I applied these, and got errors about dependencies. Stupidly I rebooted the machine and now I get to the KDE login screen but cannot start KDE - I get the disk icon then get returned to the splash screen. I can login to a terminal I have tried <apt-get install> - this gives The following packages have unmet dependencies kdelibs-bin kdelibs5-dbg kdelibs5-dev libplasma3 I now try <apt-get -f install> - this gives The following extra packages will be installed kdelibs5 kdelibs5-data kdelibs5-dev Then I get a screen full of errors like dpkg: error processing......blah blah E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) Can someone please help?? Thanks, John |

Oh dear.
First make sure that you have an up to date repository cache.
Then try to update KDE again.

I have reloaded the cache - but how do I update KDE?
What command should I type in the terminal. Thanks for your patience - not too familiar yet... John |

Try sudo apt-get help. It should give you instructions on what subcommand to give it in order to update your packages. Just replace help with what it specifies and run the command.

Here's the best way to upgrade to KDE 4.4. Works on Kubuntu and Linux Mint 8 KDE CE:
Do this at your own risk of course. KDE 4.4 does have a few bugs yet but bug fix type updates to 4.4 have been coming in hot and heavy since it's release which have so far fixed the major glitches such as no desktop and the disappearing login screen. Check the following thread out on the Linux Mint forums if you encounter problems. The users who have updated "Helena" KDE CE to 4.4 have posted a few work arounds to the major glitches: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 25&start=0 Again, if you keep the backports repo (above) selected after the update to 4.4 you should get the bug fixes on a regular basis if they weren't included in the initial upgrade. Good luck!
Running Linux Mint 8 KDE CE w/KDE 4.4 on upgraded HP a645c>>AMD 3200+, 1.0Gb, Nvidia 6200 video card w/256 dedicated. Yeah, it's old. So am I.
