My OpenSuSE is running KDE 4, and I love the look and feel of it. Or at least I did. Now when I log in I get past the graphical log in screen and it come us with a report bug dialog box. The error I get at the bottom of the box is:
Executable kdeinit4 PID: 4913 Signal:11 Segmentation fault. When I get past the dialog box it goes to a blank screen where I only have a mouse pointer but cannot see the task bar at the bottom or the jumpstart button, If something wants to run on startup (such as auto updates) it runs. I am actually typing this from Firefox as the splash screen appeared when I signed in as root for the first time and I had several links to start firefox. Does anyone recognize this error and can you help me get my KDE back. |

When you run as a new user does KDE start successfully? Have you recently installed anything or updated anything?

I added a new user and it had no effect, the screen still came up blank just showing the mouse pointer.
I do the routine updates that OpenSuSE offers and I have added updated lib's to try and get K3b to write music CD's from MP3's, the MAD libs. I checked the error log using: cat messages | grep error | less and around the time this all started I began to get npviewer.bin segfaults and plasma-desktop segfaults: The most significant I believe is: kernal: [1023 124450] plasma-desktop[7237]:sefgault at 66 ip b74e53ff sp bfda03bc error 4 in libplasma.so.d.0.0 [b734e000+zb3000] any thoughts? |

These segfaults are likely related. I have never seen libplasma.d.x.x libraries before, there should only be libplasma.4.x.x libraries. Can you please check the integrity of your system?

OK, sorry if I didn't state this earlier, but I am a bit of a Linux newbie. I can write a config script for Cisco routers, but I am not sure how I would check the integrity of my system. Can you please explain?

First use YaST to disable everything except the official openSUSE repos, and the KDE 4.4 repos if you use those using Software Repositories. Then refresh all repositories.
Then open Online Update and install any pending updates, then reboot if instructed, otherwise logout and back in again.

OK, I can do that, I had not heard that explanation before. Will do it later this evening and post it as soon as possible. probably by morning in New Zealand.
Thanks very much |

bcooksley:
Ok, so I followed your instructions, there were only 3 updates and one of them was for a SIS video card problem, so I left it there as I have an ATI. When YaST had finished I quit, logged out, then logged back in and ran init 5 and got the same Executable kdeinit4 PID XXXX Signal 11 (segmentation fault). Any suggestions? |

Oh and I should add, I only have: OSS, Non-OSS, Packman, and Update repositories loaded as this is the advice of the SuSE community.

Can you please try pressing "Alt + F2" then type in the box that appears at the top of the screen "konsole" and run it. From there, please run "plasma-desktop &" and post the output of that command here if it crashes.

Ok, so I got the run command dialogue box, boy wish I had known how to run that before, could have save a lot of time.
When I ran plasma-desktop & I got the same effect: The debug screen came up and reported an Executable: plasma-desktop PID XXXX Signal 11 (segmentation fault). Thoughts? |

What was output in the Konsole window? You should run it from there, since this output will likely reveal who is the culprit.

It seems to crash right after creating your Panel... which assuming use of the default configuration means that Kickoff, the menu isn't functioning correctly.
Have you installed any new applications recently?

I don't believe I have. The problem started on 4 March 10 and just prior to that the system had done an automatic update. When I used it next it had Opera and some other web apps. Also, I had tried to get some lib's that K3b said it would need if it were to burn mp3 to music CD's. This did not work as the MAD Mp3 lib that it was asking for did not load properly. I have been asking the folks over at openSuSE forums for help as well and had forgot about the library thing. It was just after that that the trouble started. I am not sure how to look at my lib's or even if I can look at all of them in one report.
At this point I am not sure what to do. any help is appreciated. |
