ok i have linux mint 8 and i was wondering there is a option on the login to choose KDE or Gnome, is it possible to get KDE 4.4 plasma desktop and its features like Kubuntu and interface to work on my computer basically have a choice to use gnome or KDE at the login without messing up any of my programs or drivers, media etc? and without installing a second partition

Your login screen should offer a "sessions" menu, or something equivalent which offers this selection. KDE and GNOME can safely co-exist.
