It seems there is an elephant in the room and nobody's talking about it. I have *tried* to install Kubuntu 8.04, 8.10, & 9.10 on my 64-bit AMD. The install script(s) run(s) and then when it is time to reboot it just can not do it!
I looked on the forums of Ubuntu and here at Kubuntu. No one is talking! It does not work on SuSE either! What are we to do? Abandon KDE? God! I hope not. I've been using KDE since 1995 on SuSE 5.2 and resisting panic for almost a year. |

You've tried Kubuntu so many times, why don't you try PcLinuxOS, Mandriva, Debian, etc.?
That said, your post is barely helpful to you or us.

the openSUSE 11.2 KDE Live CD works fine ( I used it to install the underlying system for my current installation, although I build KDE myself )

I am running two AMD 64 systems and have successfully run OpenSuse, Kubuntu, and am currenty running Mandriva 64bit Editions using KDE and they have worked fine. I have never had success getting the live CD for PC Linux OS to ever boot on my systems though. Maybe there is something else the issue? |

Sounds like the elephant is in your computer!?! This seems to be the main problem. My guess it is something to do with grub - how do you boot your newly installed system? For what it is worth, try reinstalling (doesn't take long), document your setup and post any questions/problems on kubuntuforums.net - a very friendly forum full of good advice. HTH

To dpalacio, bcooksley, wtbennington, toad: Thank you for your responses. They were all useful to me even though mine were not to some of you. I will think this over; it is indeed possible that the 64-bit cpu is what's giving me trouble, and a reinstall with appropriate diligence is the answer. I can also consider PcLinuxOS and SuSE 11.2. Again, thank you all.

Drewmeister,
Last night after this, I downloaded the Kubuntu 10.04 Beta2 and I installed it with no problems. So far in my limited experiance when you have problems like you have that they are a result of the video card drivers and not KDE or the OS. What kind of video card do you have? |

Why do people assume that their problem is everybody's problem ? I've installed Debian + KDE 4.3.4, Arch + KDE 4.4.2, openSUSE 11.2, Sidux Moros & Kubuntu 10.04, all on AMD64 systems. No problems.

I have been using KDE as my desktop environment of choice for years, and especially in AMD64 flavor (my two primary test distributions are openSUSE and Kubuntu), so i would have to disagree there (I'm running 4.5 RC1 in oS 11.2 right now). The biggest issue with KDE 4.5 right now is with KDE's window manager (the performance thereof), and that issue is largely distribution-neutral; the performance simply lags that of the KDE window manager in 4.4.x (especially 4.4.4). |
