Hello all, I am currently using kubuntu, and am seriously considering switching distros. Am looking for a debian based distro that
1. is either compatible with the ubuntu reps or has the same amount of software (30,000 packages) 2. has a good kde implementation, hopefully using kde as the main DE. 3. has good support. tried opensuse, horribly slow IMO, tried mandiva, liked it but afraid that it wont have all the software I need. Also it is rpm based. |

Maybe you should try MEPIS.
It's debian based KDE distro. You can also consider Debian itself. |

MEPIS is based on Debian Stable but, less outdated on the desktop side.
Sidux is based on Debian Unstable but, less unstable.

thanks for the replies just a couple things, say i switched to sidux. It would be compatible with all up to date debian and ubuntu repos?
I just tried debian out, not bad first thing id do is lock the root account though. I very well might be going debian, but if sidux proves to be nicer and compatible with debian repos then im going that way. gooood byee kubuntu! |

Sidux is compatible with Sid. And Kubuntu is based on Sid so, Kubuntu packages should be compatible at some level (not always 100%).

Debian testing branch with kde from sid
As far as I've heard, Debian has nice packages for KDE unlike /some/ distros derived from it. * * Haven't tested it - I'm compiling KDE manually. |

Maybe you´re interested in Chakra
Its Archlinux + pre-installed KDE + LiveCD with KDE + Graphical Tools for System Setup/Installation http://chakra-project.org Oh and the KDE that comes with Chakra is mostly Vanilla (except some brandings here and there) // Edit im really sorry, i totally overread the "Debian based" -.- so Chakra ist not Debian based at all :/ sry |

eh no problem i actually tried and liked chakera, but the arch people seem to be unfriendly on their forums and on #archlinux. And i dont like the idea of having to compile my own programs (i heard i had to do that with arch somewhere) |

Well Chakra is not in #archlinux but in #chakra
and we're not ArchLinux, Chakra is a separate distro with own packages and repositories. About compiling in Arch -> it's weird, the arch repository is pretty big. ARCHLINUX != CHAKRA Chakra is distro specially made for run KDE and Qt apps, Chakra is Gtk free, you can still use some Gtk apps like Gimp as "bundles" click'n'run apps macosx style, but they never get installed in the host. |
