Hi,
Like the title says, all the icons that link to a application are owned by root. I place the icons on the panel by drag and drop from the kickoff launcher. I'm running Arch Linux right now but I used the same method on Mandriva Linux before. The same thing happens when I drag a icon to the desktop. I renamed the ~/.kde4 folder logged out and back in without any result. I created a new user with KUser, logged into that user but the error remains. I can delete the icons owned by root as a normal user by just right-click > remove this icon. Launching the application works fine to. I discovered the problem when I wanted to edit one of the applications' icons with right-click > Icon settings ( I'm using a different icon theme ). There I noticed that I was unable to change anything and the permissions tab says: user: root, group: root. I edited a icon in the Menu editor (edit in the command ), saved the changes and dragged and dropped the icon to the panel. The icon was then owned by me, as it should be. Is there any way to fix this ? Running Arch Linux I had to manually install KDE, maybe I missed some configuration ? Or is it a bug ? I'm running KDE 4.4.5 on Arch linux x86-64 Thanks, Varg |

This is a behaviour that is expected and that was exhibited by KDE 3.5 also I believe. As far as I am aware, this cannot be fixed.

Thanks for the reply.
I see. Why was this reintroduced ? In KDE 4.3 I could manage the icons myself and I don't understand why a user wouldn't be allowed to edit the icons on the panel. Guess the best option would be to make a suggestion for the developer team to remove this behavior in the next KDE release ? For now I'll stick to editing the icons in the menu editor. |

I would recommend filing a report at bugs.kde.org regarding this, suggesting that the Menu Editor be used to manage the panel icons.
