I have just installed debian testing (squeeze) amd 64 which contains kde 4.4.5. I have downloaded .deb files for firefox and chrome. Under kde 3.5.10 clicking on .deb files would bring up kpackage, However kde 4.4.5 thinks .deb files are .tar files and sterts ark! How can I get kde 4.4.5 to "manually" install from these deb files?

have you installed kpackagekit (requires packagekit)?
see http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/KP ... tent=84745

ps - in konsole something like sudo dpkg -i package.deb

I do have "sessioninstalle" which seems to be related to packagekit. I ran
"dpkg -i package.deb[/quote" but got "No such file or directory" I suspect the problem is the result of installing the testing version of debian rather than the stable version.

no, no - package.deb is the actual name of the deb you wish to install

ie dpkg -i firefox.deb or dpkg -i chrome.deb

Now I understand.

I tried dpkg -i chrome.deb and got back

cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
chrome.deb

This isn't so pressing now that I've got iceweasel running now. I suspect that the problem originates in the fact that my debian is the testing version rather than the stable version

I don't know about Debian, but in most distros you need root privileges to install packages. If you have sudo installed:
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg -i chrome.deb
<write your password>

can you run and post results here, it looks like you have a faulty .deb
ls -l chrome.deb
file chrome.deb
dpkg -p chrome.deb

The updated version of synaptic installed chrome perfectly. "All's well that ends well". Thanks for your help
