Hello
I installed Kubuntu yesterday and the first thing I did was upgrade the system...It was a huge process...As first it got upgraded to KDE 4.5.3 and then when I rechecked for upgrades...It showed more upgrades where avilable.. Once Eveything Got installed...I activated my Graphics Card driver..It is an Nvidia Grphics card.. Then When everything was working fine..I installed restricted extras and did all the fresh installation work.. Today morning when I booted up the system...I can see Kubuntu 10.10 in boot screen...But then the screen goes blank/Black.. I cannot do anything nor see anything... Is there a way to restore my desktop..?? Please Help me solve this problem Thank You |

Is this prior to login? If the login manager can't load, then you likely have a problem with the NVidia driver and your currently installed X/Kernel stack.

I guess so..Because I have enabled auto login...It just boots and shows KUBUNTU 10.10..and straight after that the screen goes blank.. Is there a way to disable graphics card driver..??without reinstalling..?? |

Yes, by uninstalling the NVidia driver using the process you installed it with. Then remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf
If you used apt-get or another graphical utility to install the driver, I suggest using apt-cache search nvidia to find the name of the package(s) you need to uninstall.

I have the same problem on FreeBSD:
when I start KDE (startx) it looks that is okay but than screen became black and just a mouse cursor is visible. Mouse works . I deinstall kdebase, kdelibs, kdebase-runtime and kdebase-workspace and now I am recompiling them... I don't know if it help. |

Try Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to a console - I think it should work even if your graphics card isn't working, although I'm not sure.
From there, try following bcooksley's suggestions. |
