I would recommend removing /tmp/ksocket-$USER outside KDE, along with /tmp/kde-$USER. Do not remove them whilst KDE is operational, as new processes will fail to contact kdeinit, leading to many problems.

I had the same problem and I solved it by removing the cache- file from ~/.kde

Not only is your handle totally awesome, your method also solved my problem. I have marked this thread as resolved, as it did work and it let me back into my beloved KDE again. Thanks all for your help!
