When I start X and KDE I can see that there are lots of messages sent to the terminal. How can I capture those messages into a file so I can check for problems/errors?

Assuming you run "startkde" or "startx" to start X and KDE, please try adding "&> /path/to/log/file" to redirect the content to a file for later analysis.
