Speed Problems In Kubuntu 10.04 LTS

Thu Feb 17, 2011 10:55 am
Hi! Thanks For Viewing, Well Appreciated :)

I've been running KDE 4.4.4 on my Kubuntu LTS since it was released... and as of lately I've had some major speed problems that have had me hard reset the laptop from the power button. The system becomes unresponsive to things it didn't use to. These are the symptoms:

1. Long login time, usually about 10 minutes or more, the normal boot-up is very fast. The shutdown is also the same.*^
2. Changing color, themes, window borders, grinds the system to a halt until the whole transform is over (before it used to just change in a few seconds)*^
3. Running FireFox or Chromium (no problems with Konqueror or ReKonq for an hour slows the system down to a halt. After which sometimes Compositioning gets disabled, and if it keeps this way KDE sometimes resets itself and I find myself on the KDM.*

* - Heightened Disk Activity (HDD Led Is Constantly On, And Does Not Blink)
^ - During log-on and style changing I notice that there is a small semi-opaque (usually gray) shadowed rectangle at the top-left corner of the screen, resembling a pop-up kinda that keeps flickering. I think it's a GTK thing? ???

The Heightened Disk Activity made me suspect hardware problems, so I did badblocks and fsck on the disk, and both turned up negative for problems. No badblocks and no filesystem problems. I looked through these forums to see if something similar was there, but couldn't find any.

As said in one topic... I Disabled Nepomuk, Akonadi, Indexing and Strigi in KDE. Performance rose slightly, but I still suffer the same problems.

As of now I'm just using Konqueror, KSysGuard, And Amarok and the current CPU% is 14-45 :-\ is this normal?. Also there is a lot of gtk-kde4's under kdeinit4.

My laptop specs are as follows (Courtesy of KInfo Center):
Code: Select all
Memory   : [Physical] 993.2 MiB
           [Swap] 2.84 GiB
Processor: Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2080  @ 1.73GHz
Disk     : 104.7 GiB Out Of Which 28.5 GiB Remains
GPU      : Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Any Help (Or Clobbering) Is Greatly Appreciated ^-^

if you create and login as a new user does the problem still happen?

the gtk-kde4 processes doesn't sound right especially if you are not running gtk (Gnome apps). In systemsettings change the style used for gtk apss or even remove the gtk-kde4 package.

from konsole run iotp to see if you have process(s) thashing your harddrive which can really slow a system

the 14 to 45% cpu being used is used by what processes? T2080 is a dual core so 45% would be almost 100% of one of the cores

turn off desktop effects

during the 10 minutes to login go to a virtual terminal alt+ctrl+F2 and run top to see what process are eating cpu when logging in and then run iotp to see what processes are eating disk

before logging in remove these 2 directories /tmp/kde-use /var/tmp/kdecache-user

Thanks <<google01103>>!

ITop Showed That gtk-kde4 was eating up all my disk during login, guess I was right about that transparent-box in the left-top corner on my screen being a gtk-kde4 thingy...

When I got back to KDE and opened up KSysGuard, sure as sure the gtk-kde4 processes were in large numbers... after selecting and killing all those processes... I thought of trying out changing the styles, and they worked without a hitch... just uninstalled gtk-kde4 from my system, and it works like before.

Many thanks for your help and time <<google01103>>!! :) You Rock!!!
