Yo, so I just installed Kubuntu on here, and am horrified to find that there's no Skype... I've gone through other forums, and everyone seems to be able to pack skype onto their computers, but it looks like they've all got older versions of the program. Any ideas? Please?

You can get it from the Skype web page, as far as I can tell. They provide a DEB for Ubuntu, which would work for you.

I'm sorry. I don't mean to sound stupid. But do you mean that I can simply download it as if I were using straight Ubuntu? Because I tried that and it didn't work... |

Yes, Skype for Ubuntu can be installed on Kubuntu, as Kubuntu and Ubuntu are effectively the same distribution (except that Kubuntu installs KDE and KDE applications by default, and Ubuntu installs GNOME and GNOME applications by default)

I am having the same problem. I am using kubuntu 11.04 and I
previously set up a skype account on kubuntu, but I cannot install it now. I went to the ubuntu help site with: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Skype and entered the commandline that was suggested on that page: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install skype When it ran, there were some notes at the end of the stuff that you have to scroll back to read I will just copy the last few lines: ................... Ign http://dl.google.com stable/main Translation-en Fetched 1,058 kB in 7s (143 kB/s) W: Failed to fetch cdrom://Kubuntu 11.04 _Natty Narwhal_ - Release amd64 (20110427)/dists/natty/main/binary-amd64/Packages Please use apt-cdrom to make this CD-ROM recognized by APT. apt-get update cannot be used to add new CD-ROMs W: Failed to fetch cdrom://Kubuntu 11.04 _Natty Narwhal_ - Release amd64 (20110427)/dists/natty/restricted/binary-amd64/Packages Please use apt-cdrom to make this CD-ROM recognized by APT. apt-get update cannot be used to add new CD-ROMs W: Failed to fetch http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... ty/Release Unable to find expected entry 'contrib/source/Sources' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file) E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. ................... I do not know if these lines are helpful, anyway. Initially, I did not think these were too serious, but when I tried to find the application in K -> Applications -> Internet -> Skype skype simply was not there. I searched for "skype" and came up empty handed. On the commandline, I tried to enter skype and got: skype: command not found I have had some success installing ubuntu and even .deb packages in kubuntu before, but with this one, it is just not there. Where can I turn? |

before you run the apt-get commands you need to add the Canonical Partner Repository, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repos ... positories

Poor new guys. You start telling them about some new repositories and command line -> they think KUbuntu is total sh*t, and they are right from this point of view.
Just download http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-sky ... g.ubuntu32 and install it as a simple exe on Windows. As for "old version", linux version numbering is far behind Windows or Mac. However, the skype is almost 100% functional comparing to the latest versions. |

Don't be "evil" - they may only think that it is sh*t, because nothing run by default.
It is better to tell them the advantages, like that you can fix some errors the software is delivered with and which occur only on your individual system. Tell them how difficult it is to find some important informations like the autostart programms in windows - you have to find at least 6 or 8 different locations to get only a part of these. In ?ubuntu you have a command line next to your programm in the task manager. Give it a try and don't scare away each newbe The problem is that Microsoft has too many influence on skype. |
