I have been using Kubuntu 10.10 for months. It worked without problem. Today I tried to install the package "plasma-widget-fancytasks". I couldn't do it directly: I was required to install "libkephal4". Aftet this I noticed that "libtaskmanager4a", "libkonq5" and "plasma-widget-fancytasks" were installed, but I didn't get the result I was expecting: no change on the Task bar (there were still icons and captions). I restarted my Dell Laptop (inspiron 1520, Core 2 Duo). But:
The login screen shows up, I type in my password but Kubuntu throws me back to the login screen. I can login from console. (and I did it in order to remove the 4 packages I cited above). I saw somewhere from the Internet that using the command "startx" could help, but it didn't: I just can't login! I am no expert in KDE nor in linux. I appreciate your inputs. |

I think I need more info on how I shall proceed: I am not fluent in linux. Here is how I do and what I get: $ sudo bash [enter] # ~/.xsession-errors [enter] bash: /home/hakiza/.xsession-errors: Permission denied I also tried to start konqueror and dolphin from console. First I get info that both konqueror and dolphin were not installed and how to install them. I did that. Then: $ dolphin [enter] unnamed app(4374): KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-Bus session server: "/bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed" unnamed app(4373): KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpectedly $ konqueror [enter] konqueror: cannot connect to x server |

SOLVED:
I guess I messed up with some important files. But from "terminal/console", I installed "kde-standard" ($ sudo apt-get install kde-standard) and the problem was solved: I can now login without problem. Thank you very much! |
