Just installed Kubuntu Natty 64-bit on bro's Toshiba notebook.
He was using LibreOffice and saved a doc. It showed up in konqueror, but when he went to attach it to an email the file selection dialog could not see it. Same thing happened when I used KWrite or vi to create & edit a file---only iy would show up when listed from a cmdl in konsole, but not in the directory browser of either Konqueror or Dolphin. "What the Hell!?" I thought!

Then he calle me, and I checked things out a bit and it was BIZARRE!!!

Couldn't see the saved file in konsole with a `ls -a`.
Could see it in konqueror.
Couldn't see it in Dolphin.
Save it to his $HOME and could see it ok with all apps.
Exported to pdf from LibreOffice and could seee the pdf with Dolphin but not Konqueror, and not with konsole, but could open it up from cmdl using okular. "farrrrkkkk!!!"
Deleted some old files, and they looked like they were gone, BUT then I could still `cat` the file and it was still there.
Edited a couple of text files with vi,... they showed up in konsole, but not in Konqueror or Dolphin.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON??????!!!!!!!!

(a) NEVER seen anything like this in over a decade of KDE/GNU+Linux use.
(b) Suspected GUI is not reading the filesystem correctly, but then why did deleted files still appear when `cat`'ed.
(c) Something wrong with fs or with inodes? (Beyond my expertise)
(d) So suspect something is MAJORLY screwed with either software | hardware or both. But whaaaaaat?

Anyone seen such disturbing behaviour from a gnu+linux release before?

Will post an update once I can tinker around with his machine again. (He doesn't live near by).

NB: document this as another form of Murphy's Law. It was my bro's first time with GNU/Linux, so of course something as disturbing as not being able to consistently see files that he'd created or saved, show up consistently for all apps and ways of viewing the filesystem...well, it almost had to happen right? I mean, after the ATI graphics accel and Atheros WiFi drivers worked perfectly, and everything else looked hunky-dory something else had to give huh? :-\

This doesn't sound like a problem with KDE Software, so I would suggest that you also post to the Ubuntu forums. I have no clue what the problem is but for others it would probably be useful if you could say which filesystem it is (ext3, ext4, reiserfs etc.) and post the content of /etc/fstab.
