I have been a KDE person (for eons)

it was once easy but now it is buried in a mountain of details

no more switchdesk (for a long time)

yum install kde* no longer works but give a mountain of details

yum groupinstall "KDE Software Compilation" same

no place in the login dialog

Gnome is still a disaster

you could start with the Fedora KDE spin http://fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora-options#desktops

your problems with Yum and installing KDE are Fedora not KDE issues, Fedora packages the code KDE makes available

switchdesk afaik is not part of KDE, if you want/need it in Fedora you need to contact them or compile it yourself

what do you mean by "no place in the login dialog"? You mean KDE is not a selectable menu item? You do not say if KDE was successfully installed, if not installed it would not be an option. Are you using GDM or KDM for the display manage?

note: moved to Operating System specific -> Linux

I don't use Fedora but supposedly
Code: Select all
sudo yum groupinstall "KDE Software Compilation"
is what you should use, if this does not work you should post some of the messages listed and/or post on the Fedora forums because your issues are distro specific

Guess the question boils down to

If I have kde installed, how do I start KDE :)

Well, a more radical way would be to uninstall gdm so that kdm starts by default :D

Seriously, feodora should have a way of being told which login manager to load as soon as X starts. Not having used an rpm based distro for donkeys' years I wouldn't know, though.

Anyway, that should give you enough to go on and use google to good effect :)

I assume the login screen is GDM, on this screen at the bottom left should be an "options" button, does clicking options open a list including KDE that can be selected?

if not as root run: init 3
this should switch you to a command line terminal session, login and as root and type: kdm
the KDM login screen should have a "session type" button, click it and select "kde"

from http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/KDE

Add the following line to /etc/sysconfig/desktop:

/etc/sysconfig does not exist

DESKTOP="KDE"

Idea.png
If this file already contains a DESKTOP entry, you must replace that entry.

To make KDM the default display manager, add the following line to /etc/sysconfig/desktop:

DISPLAYMANAGER="KDE"

yum install switchdesk
or
yum install switchdesk-gui both work

execution does nothing

solved by me

at login, a password dialog appears and there is a sessions pop down list

select kde or whatever

BTW kde has a desktop switch so Gnome must have one
