Hello,
after KDE-upgrade to 4.8 the Sound doesn't function. Before this the sound are ok. I have already checked the soundchannels into alsamixer. I use Kubuntu 11.10 32Bit. (3.0.0-15) Here the output from cat /proc/asound/cards:
lspci | grep -i audio shows:
The comand aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav are playing without sound:
The output from ls -la /dev/snd/:
pactl stat shows:
I use phonon with Gstreamer (phonon gstreamer backend version: 4.5.1) Audio hardware is "Internes Audio, Profil is "Analog Stereo Duplex" and Audio-Gerät is "Wiedergabe (Internes Audio Analago Stereo) My Motherboard is a FSC-Board D1607 with OnBoard Soundcard. When I boot a Kubuntu Live CD, so the sound are ok with the original KDE-Version. Who can help me ? Thanks, sun312 |

Hello sun. Have you got sound on tty without X?? do you listen sound doing #mpg123 "yourfile.mp3"?
Have you tried to reinstall asla-base, pulseaudio and its dependences? Regards |

Please open KMix, alsamixer or pavucontrol and verify that no needed output is muted.
Also, check to make sure the output is not disabled with Pulseaudio by opening System Settings > Multimedia > Phonon > Audio Hardware Setup. Your sound card should be something similar to "Internal Audio" (or the name of the card) and Profile should be similar to "Analog Stereo Duplex".

Hello Yczo, hello bcooksley,
thanks for your reply. Excuse my late answer. I tried mpg123 without X, but no sound. Reinstalling alsa-base, pulseaudio and phonon doesn't help. Before them I checked that the output is not disabled with Pulseaudio and kmix. My sound card is showing as "Internal Audio" and the Profile is "Analog Stereo Duplex". I will now reinstalling Kubuntu 11.10 32Bit, backing up the fresh system and installing again KDE4.8. After this I will report you the result. Thanks for your help. Best regards, sun312 |

After new installation the sound works !
I have done following: 1. Kubuntu 11.04 32Bit 2. Patches (apt-get update; apt-get upgrade) 3. Update to Kubuntu 11.10 4. Patches (apt-get update; apt-get upgrade) 5. Update to KDE 4.8 I couldn't directly install Kubuntu11.10 (32 or 64Bit) because the Installer crashed while the installation. Same with the Linux Mint12 KDE-Version. On the installation from the alternative-CD the installer crashed at the software-selection part. I am surprised that the sound comes out at the blue (Line-In), not the green (Line-Out) connector. With WindowsXP the sound comes out on the green connector. In the Bios I can't select between Stereo and Surround-Sound (5.1/7.1). I use only stereo with 2 speakers. Sometimes its all a little bit strange ! Best regards ! |

The difference in terms of connector is very unusual - and likely indicates that your sound card has various quirks that the ALSA drivers are not aware of at this point in time. Please file a bug report with your distribution so they can make adjustments if needed.
(In the case of my system - headphones were not detected with the first round of distributions, but were with the second - the headphone port worked in any case, but the inbuilt speaker was not disabled)

Is it all sound or just system notifications? If the latter, it's an easy fix. Just make sure the full path is included for each sound.

in my case, it worked by changing
system settings> multimedia> phonon> audio hardware setup connector option from "stereo headphones" to "stereo speakers" each time i connect my speakers, i have to do this manually. Default connector option i.e. "stereo headphones" does not give any output. Hope this helps, before permanent changes are made through updates. |

This configuration option comes from Pulseaudio, and will remain available in future updates.
