I think the problem is due to powerdevil in 4.1. I had the same problem in Arch (as well as X going berserk and eating up a CPU core). Uninstalled powerdevil and installed guidance power manager and the problem was gone.
Running 4.2 beta in Debian (MEPIS) gives no issues.

Thanks all - when I have some spare time I'll try all these suggestions - the idea of using 4.2 beta is interesting sathiskumarmsk, so I'll try that, and I'd not thought anything about powerdevil so that's another thing to go with. I've got a working system, but I just can't get on with Gnome the same way as I've done with KDE for the last three years. |

I have the same issue. My mouse can move, but the screen doesn't update, and nothing I do on the keyboard (ctrl-alt-backspace, ctrl-alt-f1, capslock even) works.
I'll try some of your suggestions tonight or tomorrow and see how that helps.

I had similar problems (complete lock, from trunk) but since updating to nVidia driver 180.18 this has not happened.

Hm, I'm running 180.18 too. (Also running KDE 4.1.87 on kde-testing overlay on Gentoo). 180.22 is out and it's in the process of coming to the Gentoo overlay for it, so I'll post here again with any improvements (hopefully) when I update.
The main thing that causes my hangs is when I'm typing into the URL bar of Firefox. Typing quickly causes that little suggesting dropdown to pop up, and then hang in mid pop. I'm right now writing this in Konqueror, which doesn't seem to have the same issues. I'm not sure if I was just lucky at the time or if it's really because it is, but if I disable desktop-effects I don't get the hangs. (Unless it hangs, resumes randomly after a loooong wait saying compositing is too slow and will be turned off, then I get display glitches - eg: black windows - and then it'll hang for real again)

Ok, I've updated to 180.22 and noticed no improvements to this issue. Unfortunately.
Anyways, right now I'm just running without desktop effects, and so it doesn't hang any more. Note: I find that if it hangs, a good thing to do to restore it is to SSH in from another comp and then just kill X. Sometimes if it's really unresponsive that doesn't quite work either though.

I can't use Desktop effects, and it still hangs. When it does, I cannot SSH from anywhere - the network interface is locked out too, so a power down is the only option. I've not tried 4.2 beta yet, but may have to as I can't be doing with this freezing every few minutes.... |
