i have installed kde-4.1.2 in a gentoo box from gentoo portage tar balls.
root and user login work ok in twm and from console. even after editing kdmrc file to AllowRootlogin=true root login comes back to login screen without any message. user login works fine. as user does not have X browse/edit of system files root login is required. this install does not have any other desktop. this is third installation of kde-4.1.2 in gentoo including one in laptop. the other 2 installas have kde-3.5.10 also installed.where root login works just fine. what kde file i should look in to find what holds the root login from invoking kde desktop? any help is highly appreaciated.otherwise kde-4.1.2 work fine. my current kernel is 2.6.24-gentoo-r8 p4 2,5Ghz 512 mb 845 mother board. i willbe happy to post any more info necessary.

I believe that you cannot currently run KDE 4 applications from a root console ( even one with the DISPLAY variable set correctly ) which I am suspecting is causing the problem.
Also, is there /root/.kde/ or /root/.kde4/ folders?

i have 3 kde-4.1.2 installations including this. the other two have kde-3.5.10 basiacally and kde4 additionally. there i am able to login root and all applications work just fine. only in this kde4 alone install it behaves this way.. to exclude the reason you have said i am now installing kde-3.5.10 also in this system to see if that will open up the root login. after kdm can login to root i can always uninstall kde-3.5. i will get back with result. thanks for replying. ![]() i run gentoo in all three kde4 installs and one ubuntu-8.04 i have installed kde-4.1.2 with kde-3.5 all have root login enabled.

You should consider making a user capable of running X and use that. if you have root rights you can create & modify users.

Me confused, how you mean root only on console login? its set to autologin & you don't know the pass or?
Please elaborate

i am running gentoo. never install auto login kde. you will be in trouble if not now. root login now possible with kdm-3.5.10 installed. for which i had to install half kde-3.5 installs. anyway now i can root login in kde4.1.2 ,kde-3.5.10 and xfce4.2 the other 2 desktops are for trying to enable root login. i can either install full versions or uninstall them. http://omploader.org/vdm9v/root%20console.png i have given a screen shot of desktop. have a look ![]() will try that later on. now the current problem is solved. thanks for all replies.
