Hi,
I have just opened up a thread on linux mint forums. This thread goes like this:
<<Hi,
I had some problems with cinnamon and gnome 3 so I installed LXDE to work with it for a while.
I tested out KDE desktop (from linux debian sources) on my laptop meanwhile.

So, when I was used to it, I changed to latest KDE 4.8 on my workstation. Installed over the packagemanager after adding a repository.

kdm is standard window manager and "everything is quite" okay.
But now I realized that on the menu which opens up, when You make a mouse click with the right button, I think the context menu or service menu, it is called, that there are some things missing.
The zip or other archive things don't work.
I tried to use dolphin settings but they dont give me any option to add a menu, I d like to have and that should be there already (compressing).

I tried to untick the service "Extract here" and tick it on again, but without any success.

I dont know any further.
7-zip is installed already from the beginning but I dont get any dialog.
Only thing I can do is right click on an archive and say "open with.." then a gnome archiver opens up, but just for uncompressing, and also without any direct dialog.

Where are the KDE archivers? How can I add them to the service menu?
Right now I cannot archive any files over the context/ service menu.

See german screenshot. (For taking this screenshot I had to install ksnapshot first, think that SOME relations are not met on my desktop)
Screenshots

P.S.: Generally I think, through not installing a KDE distribution, I have some chaos on my system now. Gnome and lxde and KDE mixed up a little bit. The designs differ a lot from program to program.
Thanks in advance.

do you have Ark installed? it would be the default KDE compression tool

do you have the gzip, zip and unzip packages installed?

Hi,
thanks for Your answer.
Ark is not installed, all others yes.

Ill give it a try now.

EDIT:

Damn, that was all. ARK was missing.

Thank You very much :-)

Different question:
How can I be sure, that KDE 4.8 is completely installed and free of errors?

Don't know any way, but I am surprised that your distro didn't include Arm in the default install

I have started with Linux Mint 12 Gnome and only later installed KDE 4.8 over the repositories.

But this is also kind of curios.

Couldnt I simply go ahead and uninstall every gnome and GDE pacakge? And still have the system running nicely?

I have also some really wrong dependancies. When I downloaded anything in Firefox and open the folder right out of the download history, Konqueror is used.

Cheers.

you did't install over you installed in addition to, having Gnome, or at least some of the libraries, will allow you to run Gnome apps if you'd like/need to. But if you need the space or wish to be Gnome free you could remove them but not sure how to do this best in Mint, might be a "Gnome" entry in the package manager and deleting that deletes all Gnome - I'd ask Mint.

"When I downloaded anything in Firefox and open the folder right out of the download history, Konqueror is used." When you right click -> open containing folder then Konqueror would be used if it was your default file manager, if you'd rather Dolphin then systemsettings -> default applications -> file manager -> Dolphin
